SYNOPSIS

A girl loses everything, all in one day.
Her village, and even worse—her father…

In their place, she acquires a new power.
When she takes up a sword to protect herself and her loved ones, she discovers that it is “cursed” and holds immense power.

Having obtained something that could shake the very foundations of the nation, the girl has no choice but to live on the battlefield.

The ultra-nationalistic military academy, Nirvana, becomes her new home.
There, young men and women who excel in combat gather to compete and sharpen their skills, regardless of their background.

She meets new people, forges strong bonds, and finds what she thought she’d lost: a place to belong.

This is the story of the girl and the talking cursed sword by her side.

ART AND MUSIC

Director and Producer: Hironori Ohno
Scenario: Yuma Katagiri
Artist: Yumiko Takemura (Character Design and Head Illustrator)
OST: Shota Horei (Composition, Arrangement) AKINO (Artist), bless4 (Artist)
BGM: Shota Horei

The main artist/illustrator for Battlefield Waltz is Yumiko Takemura, who has also worked on several popular otome projects in the past, such as “Oops, I’m the Bride” and Irresistible Mistakes” by Voltage Inc. They were also one of the assisting artists for Otomate’s Jakou no Lyla.

Also, and this one is important, I think it’s good to note that the game has approximately 241 illustrations in total. This includes the fan service bonus CGs you can unlock through Xiaolei’s shop. Are you kidding me? 😱 200+ CGs to gawk at?! 🤩Technically, if we’re only talking about in-game CGs, there are 184 illustrations, which is still more than the average CG collection you get from newer titles today. This is part of why I kind of miss older games in general, because they really give you an abundance of CGs back then. Plus, all the side characters have sprites!

The game’s OST was also lovely, and I really wish it had been included in the game’s “Plus Edition”. But since this title was originally released over a decade ago in Japan, I understand that it was possibly difficult to include due to IP licensing (music rights can get complicated, especially across regions and with older titles).

Anyway, if you’re planning to get a physical copy of this title, definitely go for the “Plus Edition.” I say this because the art book is an absolute rare collectible. It’s designed to resemble the “Ancient Memories” book from the game. Which I think makes it a special novelty item. Great for physical art book collectors!

MAIN CHARACTERS AND ROUTES

Battlefield Waltz, has six romance routes in total. Abel, Lustin, and Pash’s routes are available from the start. Nike’s route unlocks after clearing Abel’s Happy End“, and Tifalet’s route unlocks after clearing Lustin’s “Happy End“. Wilhelm’s route is only playable after completing the Happy Ends of all five previous routes.

Scenario writer, Yuma Katagiri recommended playing the game in this order: Abel → Lustin → Pash → Nike → Tifalet → Wilhelm. I usually trust their recommended play orders; like the one they provided for Olympia Soirée . So I basically followed this one during my playthrough and it turned out to be perfect in terms of both story progression and the overall tone of the game.

ABEL

Abel is recognized as the strongest student in Nirvana. Since his enrollment, he has remained undefeated in combat, even surpassing his instructors with his overwhelming sword skills. He also has very strong morale in battle, where he remains calm and level-headed even in difficult situations. He rarely interacts with other students and prefers to keep to himself most of the time.

First route, and it’s a tsundere Maeno?!🥹 Abel was a great starter route because his story sets up the game’s titular “battlefield” setting. I believe it’s also the only route that really focuses on the war itself, while the others deviate toward different plotlines, and that’s totally fine.

I wanna say that while the plot here didn’t exactly blow me away, there’s just something about this route that really hits the spot for me and I think it’s because of how Abel shined, both as a character and as a love interest. Like, his story was perfectly set up for him to be the main hero who triumphs in the end. Very textbook; very much the typical winner-takes-it-all male character. Plus, he was an amazing LI! A quintessential angy tsun-tsun!🥺🤲 As a tsundere enjoyer, I just love it when they suddenly show a sweet side to the heroine, even when they’re all about “tough love“. Abel’s story was chock-full of cliché romance tropes that I completely devoured and loved. So yes, I love this route! I love Abel! At the end of the route, I was left with a large grin on my face, and that’s always good thing when playing otome games!

⬇️ Spoilers

And to be perfectly honest, I actually enjoyed the plot here as well because it was very straightforward. Being the son of the enemy king and dealing with people doubting their trust in him, with the heroine being the only one to believe in him… Like, sure, plot-wise it’s a very cliche event, but it works for me!🤷‍♀️ I love how Abel reassured Lan about his goals and that he would never betray her nor Nirvana. I also love how Lan trusted Abel and fought alongside him throughout his story.

The romance was also super cute! Everything about Lan and Abel, I couldn’t get enough of. When Xialoei and Tifalet teased Abel for his exaggerated reaction to Lan’s sprained ankle as an excuse to carry her, LOL. IDK why, but that had me cackling & kicking my feet.😭 They’re so adorable!

Admittedly, the ending for this route was a bit plot-convenient. Logistically, in warfare, when you defeat a king from another nation, you don’t exactly declare yourself king right away, even if you’re the next in line, there are a lot of political factors to consider. But Idk, maybe I just turned off my brain because I loved how it ended! I don’t really have any major qualms about this route. I enjoyed it all the way to the end.

Lastly, I think Abel reminded me a little bit of Hijikata personality-wise. Crinkly angy face, very strict, very powerful on the battlefield, & very tsundere! So I guess, with all things considered, this probably made me even more biased of him. Lol.🤣

LUSTIN

  • puts the ‘lust’ in Lustin….. but not really lol
  • actually, drinks respect women juice 🤌🏼

Lustin is the second prince of Vaihazard, a small country in Ortesia. He possesses a carefree personality and loves sneaking out of the school dorm at night to partake in his so-called “nightlife.” Despite his laid-back attitude, he is known as a strong fighter in Nirvana, with everyone recognizing him as one of the best fighters, second only to Abel.

The moment I saw Lustin in the common route, I was immediately disinterested. I’m not exactly a big fan of the playboy-with-layers type. But darn it, I hate how Lustin proved me wrong. Seriously, I hate how much I ended up enjoying him as a love interest. 🙈He was surprisingly good, the greenest of green flags among everyone if I may say so myself.

This route also had a pretty strong start, and the earlier chapters made good use of the heroine’s fighting skills. Lan definitely shined here as a fighter. Her relationship with Lustin also felt natural, given how much time they spent together, so it made sense how her romantic feelings for him gradually developed. Plot-wise, things got a bit messy in the middle (for story reasons), but it ended really satisfyingly, so I didn’t mind it too much.🤷‍♀️🤣 Even so, Lustin is such a good guy though! The dude drinks respect women juice in his free time; I dont think anyone could possibly dislike him!

⬇️ Spoilers

I admit that when his evil, looney emo brother (who had a hot sprite, btw) kidnapped Lan and nicked her with his sword, I was ready for Lustin to go ballistic on him. But instead, he just brushed it off, which initially pissed me the heck off. Like, are you telling me you’re okay with her leg being severely wounded like that?😭

But in the end, his story properly explained how much he believed in his brother and that his bro really wasn’t inherently evil. His brother was also possessed by deimos, which gave him an excuse, to be shitty. Hmmm…not sure how i feel about that, but all in all, not a bad route, actually. In terms of telling Lustin’s narrative, I think his ending did a great job wrapping up his storyline.

PASH

  • blushy genki
  • depression route

Pash hails from the military nation of Daigroth. He came to Nirvana to hone his battle skills, as it is a tradition in his warrior-centered family. He is generally cheerful and loves eating samosas. He also seems to feel uneasy around women who are not familiar to him.

This route was quite different compared to the previous two I’ve played (Abel and Lustin). Pash’s route took a surprising turn and seemed to focus on battle morale as its central theme. If anything, this route really dove into the importance of maintaining the right morale during wartime, regardless of the war’s outcome. I liked that about it, it’s very distinct and felt like a refreshing approach to the narrative compared to the previous stories.

The first few chapters of this route broke me with so much adrenaline, it was hard to put the game down. The battle scenes were kinda intense! It’s fun! And I wish they had kept that intensity throughout, but I understand why they had to shift the narrative for plot and theme reasons, as mentioned above. Gotta add that angst and depression in the middle! LOL.😅 I thought Pash’s story explored into his personal growth as a character, along with the heroine who had to grow alongside him. Their camaraderie was really great here, and I liked that they both supported each other equally as partners. The ending (with that beautiful CG) was so heartwarming, and had me tearing up!

Also, this route definitely highlighted a lot of side characters in the game, and rightfully so, as they were all so well-developed and deserving of that spotlight!😤

⬇️ Spoilers

Did I mention that Pash’s dad was also a hottie?!🥵

Anyway, while it’s true that Pash’s story starts with an intense battle scene only to quickly plunged into a more depressive tone the moment hot ossan Leonidas showed his hot heroic ass and took a hit for them team.😭 I honestly wasn’t mad about it because I firmly believe that this story was written to explore the characters’ mental struggles on the battlefield. After all, the main characters are merely just kids, exposed to the horrors of war at such a young age. It’s perfectly understandable that they would lose grip on their morals at some point. This route delves into a lot of that and shows how they overcame it. It was different, and I liked it that way.

I also understood Pash’s internal struggle. The pressure of coming from such a proud, prestigious warrior lineage was clearly weighing on him. I definitely understand what he’s going through. It’s not easy to catch up to warrior prodigies like Lady Ignis, King Ildas, and Lord Evas. At the very least, I appreciated how Pash’s epilogue was different from Abel and Lustin’s, where they took on the roles of kings in their respective countries. Instead, Pash voluntarily chose to become a teacher at Nirvana, so he could train and support newer soldiers who might be facing the same struggles he once did. It was a perfect full-circle moment, paying homage to Leonidas, who had been the instructor that also shed some light into him.🥹 BRB Crying….🤧🤧🤧

NIKE

  • bake bread, 🥖 spread jam not war!
  • cinamon roll… but 👀

Nike is a soft-spoken and quiet boy who seems to dislike fighting and struggles with it as well. As a result, he is often assigned to the medical unit in Nirvana. While other students saw being placed in the medic team as a sign of inadequacy, due to their combat skills not being strong enough to qualify them in the frontlines, Nike doesn’t seem to mind at all. He has a talent for brewing medicine and likes to head out to the forest every day to gather medicinal herbs.

Another route that really surprised me! Wow! Again, this route took a turn I didn’t quite expect! (lol I realize I’m saying this phrase a lot in this review, aren’t I?) 😂😂😂 In terms of keeping me on edge, this route has to be THEE ONE in the game! I think I binged through it so easily that I didn’t even realize I was playing until the crack of dawn. (And I have a day job to succumb in the morning *cackles*)😂 Yes, it was *that* good to me. Literally, hard to put down. Sometimes the narrative’s pacing can get a little off, but I honestly hardly noticed these minor hiccups because I was too engaged and having so much fun. Anyway, I’ll save more of my thoughts for this route in the spoilers section!

⬇️ Spoilers

Goodness me! Where do I even start? First of all, the foreshadowing in this route was brilliant. Collette mentioning how her purple eyes matched Nike’s, Ghido admitting his past life as one of the most notorious enemy soldiers of Romua, the snakes in the forest, Nike being immune to snakebites and poison, and him always heading to the forest……all of these little details led up to the grand reveal of his true identity. I mean, You could already tell something was off and brewing in the corner, so it wasn’t exactly a complete surprise, but the way all those subtle hints came together made the plot twist so much more impactful. Esp. with that cutscene Cg of Nike and his black cloak! Absolutely chef kiss!

Sometimes, a good plot twist doesn’t need to completely catch you off guard. Instead, it relies on well-placed, subtle hints throughout the story that give you enough context, to make the reveal feel not just surprising, but EARNED. And this route handled that pretty well!

Another thing I really enjoyed here was the heroine. Lan starts suspecting Nike and is very proactive about it. She doesn’t brush off the little hints and clues that make her curious about Nike’s actions, despite liking him and trusting him as her friend. She genuinely thinks critically about the odd things she notices with Nike, asks questions, and even overthinks to some degree! I love a highly cautious heroine, and I feel like Lan really stood out in this route.

I was so certain that Nike was the traitor in Abel’s route, and the fact that he didn’t really deny it when accused made me think it was true. And, in the end, it ACTUALLY WAS! Ha! Plus, his last monologue had me in tears! The reason he held onto those bandages from Lan was because it was the first time in his life that someone had shown him that kind of care! That’s it! I cried buckets! My poor sweet boy! Let me give you love and affection!😭😭😭 I don’t even care how the pacing went off a bit during the last chapters or how the ending was *too convenient*, cant really be bothered to get pissed because I love this route so much!😤

TIFALET

  • emo & lonely😭
  • kind sexy , kinda handsome, kinda forceful? 😳👉👈

Tifalet is the effortlessly good-looking fortuneteller. He is quite popular among the women in town. He often finds himself in awkward situations where many openly profess their love or ask him out, but he always declines them. He dislikes the attention and would much rather be left alone.

In my opinion, the romance in this route felt a little too sudden, but there’s just something about how Kakki pulls it off that makes everything work🙈 (lol, you’ll see what I mean when you play this route). But seriously, I get it though! I mean, who wouldn’t feel butterflies if an ethereally beautiful man like Tifalet told you he liked you? Definitely not me. And definitely not Lan either! (cackles)😂

I loved Tifalet as an LI, but unfortunately, his route felt the most oddly paced out of everyone’s to me. The first few chapters were really good, and there was a lot of nuanced foreshadowing that I definitely enjoyed. But when it reached the final chapter, I felt like the story lost its footing and the buildup of this route fizzled out at the end. I wouldn’t say I disliked it, but it’s definitely my least favorite route in the entire game. Tifalet as an ikemen though? Top tier! And honestly, that’s what matters most, yes? (cackles)🤭

⬇️ Spoilers

I think Tifalet’s route started to lose direction the moment it was revealed he was actually the prince of Milveria who’d been imprisoned in the tombs. I just felt really lost in the whole narrative between his true self and his amnesiac ghost self, and then everything wrapped up way too fast, before I could even process what was going on. That never-ending back and forth in the graveyard with Mephisto drove me nuts.😂 It felt like the whole route was just Mephisto really toying with everyone! And I mean, I loved Mephisto too, so good for him I guess!LOL But I really wish Tifalet’s route could have gone in a different direction instead of the way it unfolded at the end!

WILHELM

  • irritable red headed pookie
  • a good dancer🕺

Wilhelm is a mysterious young man who shares a name with the cursed sword. His origins and his connection to the cursed sword seems to be shrouded in mystery.

Of course, the locked route is the sexiest of all the guys! Open-collar uniform to show off his muscular pecs? And voiced by Gojo, no less? I’m screaming without the S!🤤 Sexiness aside, I feel like Wilhelm was purposely written to be as rough-around-the-edges as possible. He’s always irritated, constantly clicking his tongue, and is argumentative with everyone because he trusts no one except Lan. It’s actually pretty cute how, despite his tough exterior, he seems to be attached to her while scoffing at everyone else.😂 Despite his brusque nature, I genuinely couldn’t bring myself to dislike him, though.

⬇️ Spoilers

Wilhelm was a mercenary from an era where his life was defined by constant battles. Fighting and winning were the only things that mattered to him. So you can say he’s literally a bloodthirsty warhead who lived and breathed combat to earn money. I think I can understand why he was always so irritated. It’s because he genuinely doesn’t trust anyone, except the heroine. Having been betrayed in his past, that experience lingered in his mind and became deeply ingrained in him, which is why he remains so cautious and wary of everyone around. This route made it a point to actually develop his character, giving him some leeway to open up and learn how to trust others. I appreciated the slice-of-life scenes with the gang having tea parties to cheer up Wilhelm and encourage him to open up a little to the other students.

His plot however, felt seemingly rushed towards the end? I’m not exactly sure how to put it, but it felt somewhat blasé to me. There was no wow factor; everything was predictable. But I do feel like it wrapped up the game decently, though, especially with the reveal of Lan being a reincarnation of Sapphire in Princess Knight. I’m not familiar with the series, unfortunately, but I do think it’s pretty neat that they added this twist.

It was not the full circle I was hoping for (like whatever happened to Lan’s mom and the little kid from her village?? seems pretty odd not to mention them at the end?). Good thing this really wasn’t a dealbreaker for me. And I thought everything concluded without leaving me a sour taste in the mouth so that’s good!

Plus, I believe the romance made up for it because I really loved Wilhelm’s relationship with Lan. Their little dance and date at the festival were so cute! Who would’ve thought big, brusque daddie with rottweiler energy is also a good dancer!🥺

LAN (Main Heroine)

Lan went through a LOT before she was shoved into her Nirvana storyline. Her village was attacked, burned, and destroyed. Her father was killed, and now she’s being forced to become a warrior because some magic sword merges with her. The premise really sets her up with cruel adversities, yet despite her depression, anxiety, and the grief she still carries from her father’s loss, she just kept pushing forward. Ngl, I thought that was actually remarkable.

Lan also seems to have this trait to always apologize in almost everything she does and this may probably annoy people but honestly, I thought this habit was actually relatable. She deems herself incapable and feels like she’s not up to par with her classmates, many of whom are better warriors than she is. She worries that if she doesn’t perform well enough, or if she’s not strong or skilled enough, she might be kicked out of her second home which triggers her fear of abandonment from what initially happened to her in her village. The need to always apologize for her actions is more than just a quirk actually. I view it as an emotional response, and believe it or not, there are a lot of people like that irl. That said, I think the heroine was written with a lot of emotional nuance. Technically my fav kind of heroine! Heh.

Lan is also a great fighter. Sure, she is no Shanao (Birushana) or Anastasia (EiT), but the girl can fight and hold her own on the battlefield. Loved that she is also an overthinker, an introvert, and just an awkward mess! 🥺😭 There are moments in the game where I feel like her anxiety is through the roof! 😂 (I’m saying this in a good way, because I actually adore this MC so much). I thought she was really proactive in all of the routes, but I feel like the route where she was really on the nose with everything was Nike’s route. All in all, I really love Lan as the heroine for this title, and she’s made it to my Best Girls Hall of Fame collection. She’ll be happily sitting pretty with her bestie Byakuya (OlySoi).😌

SYSTEM AND LOCALIZATION

Battlefield Waltz originally released on the PS Vita platform in Japan over a decade ago (2014). The game was later ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2023 by Otomate, and Idea Factory International announced its localization last year. That being said, the UI is somewhat outdated. It has a very straightforward design, nothing too fancy, and the text is rather large. They definitely remind me of the old Vita games, that’s for sure!

One thing I noticed immediately when I started the game was that there was no dictionary or keywords collection, which is unfortunate. For a game that’s heavy on lore and world-building, I was surprised there wasn’t one. Sometimes, the locations and names of the cities in Ortesia escape me, so it would have been really handy if they included this feature in the system.

PROS:
  • Heroine’s Name Customization.
  • CHRONICLE – The game’s flowchart which includes a summary of each event.
  • Xiaolei’s Secret Shop – where you can unlock all the bonus content (including fan service CGs).
  • MAP Mode/Exploration (which you can also access via the common route)
  • Skip READ function
  • Quick Save/Quick Load
  • Love Catch System
  • Affection PAGE – where you can track the affection points you’ve accumulated with each LI.
  • Flick Settings (hand-held mode)
  • CG Gallery
  • BGM Library
  • Movie Library
  • Story log and Rewind function
CONS:
  • Unvoiced Heroine
  • No Heroine Side Image Sprite
  • No Dictionary
  • No Skip to Next Choice
  • Very SLOW SKIP READ function – took me more than 30 mins to skip the common route (on the fastest setting).

Localization

As for the localization, I thought it was alright. There were a few typos in the game (I noticed some in the common route), though I don’t really catch them often. In terms of wording, the only thing that stood out to me was the modern phrase “bourbon on the rocks” when a customer ordered a drink at Ghido’s tavern. 😂 It felt a little out of place in the game’s medieval setting.

TEZUKA PRODUCTIONS

I didn’t catch this until after I finished the game and started poking around the system, but apparently, Tezuka Productions was involved in the original 2014 release!😱 If you go to the game’s “Movie Library”, there should be entries labeled “PV 2014 Japanese Version” and “PV 2014 Unreleased Version” which are technically the trailer/OP animations by Osamu Tezuka, aka Tezuka Productions!😱

I’m shook! If you’re old enough (like me, lol) to remember classics like Kimba the White Lion, Blue Blink, Princess Knight, Black Jack, Astro Boy, or Metropolis, yep! it’s that Tezuka. The same legendary cartoonist and animation studio! This is actually amazing! What a pleasant surprise! I really do think everyone should see this PV though! It’s so good! I’ve watched and replayed it so many times now, even now as I’m writing this review!😂

TRAILER

OVERALL THOUGHTS

It took me around 50-55 hours to complete the game. I played in a mix of handheld mode and TV/docked mode, (though the majority of my playtime was in docked mode). I also let the lines play out completely when I wasn’t on handheld, so I’d say if you’re a fast reader, you could definitely finish the game in less time than I did. The common route is on the longer side. It took me a day to get through it. The individual routes, however, were of decent length, maybe around 45 minutes per chapter.

TRPG Premise but make it Otome!

Images from Battlefield Waltz’ Official Website

Well, maybe the bold heading above was more of an exaggeration!😅 But when I first played the game, blazing through the early chapters of the common route, I definitely got a sense of the premise you’d find in a TRPG. The game’s website also features official illustrations depicting Ortesia’s military academy, “Nirvana“, as well as the world map of Ortesia (the game’s fictional continent) and the flags of its four capitals. Now, doesn’t that just feel very TRPG-esque?

I’d say the common route definitely feels a little bit like Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but with much less focus on actual war and combat, and more on the school setting. Lan and her friends do go out to the battlefield and take part in the war, but those segments are mainly there to highlight that the story is set in this kind of world, if that makes sense. And unfortunately, the “TRPG-esque feel” only sticks around in the common route, as the individual routes definitely veer off into different plotlines. The setting is in the era of medieval warfare, and there are plenty of nods to the different weapons the characters use on the battlefield, kind of like what you’d see in TRPGs too.

On another note, Battlefield Waltz’s world-building was phenomenal. I was easily immersed in the story right away, and the narrative’s flow, along with the introduction of characters, supporting characters, and in-game locations, was very easy to follow.

As for the “wartime storyline”, while the premise introduces an impending war, the narrative itself doesn’t focus on it as much. So I might as well say this now, if you’re expecting a game with a heavy, overarching war-plot, something on the level of Hakuouki or Birushana, I don’t think this is that kind of title. Given that it’s set in a fantasy world, the political and military elements don’t adhere to realistic wartime logic either. So if you’re someone pining for wartime accuracies, well…good luck with that here! (laughs). On a side note, I feel like only one route really focused on the “actual war.” The rest are more centered on the LI’s personal story, while the “war” remains mostly in the background.

In a way, that actually worked out for me, since I’m not particularly into medieval politics, or games with heavy “arthurian” themes that focus more on logistics than fantasy (those, unfortunately put me to sleep, ngl).😪 So I was genuinely relieved that the game prioritized the romance and character development between the heroine and her LIs more, rather than the complexities of war politics.

Main and Supporting Characters are Astounding!

Thought I had to mention that I loved most, if not all, of the side characters in this game. The main characters were definitely all astounding, but the side characters were just pure rays of sunshine! I loved every single one of them! The heroine’s bestie, Yuriana (who’s also best girl btw), Asaka, Xiaolei, Mephisto, hot daddy Leonidas 😮‍💨, Alias, King Serazar, Ildas, Ghido, Collette, Queen Qiora, Lady Ignis-please-step-on-me. ALL of them were lovable to an extent, and I grew very attached to them as I went on playing. Even little malfoy-blonde Richard who kept bullying Lan, grew on me by the end of the game.😅

As for my favorite side character…*cough*….I want you to take a nice look at this fine specimen right here!

Oh Leonidas… the man that you are!😩 (best boi accdg to me)

For the main cast, it was kind of hard to rank them because all six of them were really great LIs to the heroine, and I feel like each of them complemented her character one way or another. But if I had to choose a fav, I’d say, I definitely loved Abel. Idk if it’s because he was my first route, or maybe it was just Maeno doing his usual magic. I honestly can’t tell! As for the routes themselves, I enjoyed all of them, but Nike kept me up binging his story until 4AM and made me show up to work in the morning with puffy eyes😂, so I guess his route ranks best in my book?

💖LI RANKING: Abel > Nike > Lustin = Wilhelm > Tifalet > Pash

📝ROUTE RANKING: Nike > Abel > Lustin > Pash > Wilhelm >>>> Tifalet

Each route is pretty distinct from the others, and I thought the LIs’ own stories shaped their respective routes, so I never felt like my playthroughs were repetitive. This is also a game where character writing takes precedence over story-writing, so the routes and even the overarching plot often feel more reactive to the characters than the other way around.

I think it’s also worth mentioning that since this project is spearheaded by Yuma Katagiri as the head writer, you’ll definitely notice their signature brand of angst and the familiar way of how they weave foreshadowing throughout the story, along with some of their familiar romance tropes, that is, if you’ve played their other titles like Olympia Soirée, Nil Admirari, or Tengoku Struggle. The story tempo and narrative flow did feel a bit off at times, but it didn’t really become noticeable for me until the last three routes, with Tifalet’s being the worst offender.

Avatar

I know Katagiri-sensei’s stories sometimes sparks debate among Western audiences due to the use of certain tropes that can be seen differently through a Western lens. But tbh, from a technical standpoint, I’m just a big fan of how they build their setting, develop the lore, and layer in foreshadowing throughout their stories. I also really appreciate how they write romance and create nuanced heroines. So when I picked up this title, I already knew I was going to have a good time. And sure enough, I definitely did!

On the flip side, I want to give a heads-up to those who DID NOT enjoy their other works. Battlefield Waltz is set in a medieval society where women are taught to be homemakers rather than soldiers. There are definitely scenes in the game where Lan gets bullied by a classmate for being a “weak woman” on the battlefield, along with other sexist comments or scenarios here and there where some side characters deem women unsuitable for fighting or ruling. So, just a warning if you’re sensitive to that kind of content.

Contrary to what I’ve mentioned above, I do want to point out that there’s actually a strong gender equality tone in the game. For example, Milveria is ruled by a Queen instead of a King, and there are really badass female lords like Lady Ignis, who is one of the most respected warriors in Ortesia. We also have the heroine’s best friend, Yuriana, who is one of the best fighters in Nirvana, whom a lot of students respects. Xiaolei also questions why everyone is so obsessed with masculinity and femininity, and that he chooses to wear women-style clothing simply because he likes it. Wilhelm also says that regardless of gender, every soldier on the battlefield is equal. So I think it’s definitely worth keeping these aspects in mind before ruling things out immediately.💗

As for the romance, this game definitely doesn’t disappoint in giving you a lot of that sugary content when it comes to date scenarios between the heroine and her LI. They were all accompanied by beautiful CGs too! Lots of them, in fact! I can’t stress this enough! It really felt like I was being spoiled rotten by how often I was treated to varying romantic CGs throughout game. Gotta love the classics! On a different note, since the game is rated CERO C in Japan, don’t expect any “spicy” content here, as there’s none.

Do I recommend this game? YES!!
If it isn’t obvious, allow me to spell it out real quick. I love this game. I’ve been in a bit of an otome-slump recently and had been taking breaks from playing console titles due to burnout from last year. But I don’t know what it is about Battlefield Waltz; this game really reignited my love for otome games and brought back the “spark”, if you know what I mean. It reminded me of why I fell in love with the genre in the first place.🥺 This title is like a diamond in the rough for me. By no means its perfect; there are routes that I feel could’ve been structured better, and I definitely wished the finale went in the full-circle I was hoping for. But everything else about it… the lore, world-building, and the carefully molded characters, was so special to me. I really feel like they were written with a lot of heart, and there’s so much depth and warmth put into them. I really did not want the game to end, tbh.

If you love arthurian-inspired fantasy tales, with a stronger focus on romance and personal journeys rather than politics, and a really solid cast at that, this game is definitely worth it! I really enjoyed this title, and I feel like if you can overlook the minor gripes I’ve pointed above, you’ll certainly have a good time with it as well.

I’m so glad IFI decided to localize this classic title, because now I realize just how much I would have missed out on if it hadn’t been brought over! I hope they continue to bring more legacy titles like this for the western audience to experience.🙏

  2. Over 200 CGs!? I almost squealed! I was already looking forward to the game but I’m super excited now! I ordered the plus edition too (for the artbook) and it’s supposed to get here tomorrow, wasn’t expecting it so early so I can’t wait ❤ I’m surprised to see you mention Fire Emblem Three Houses, one of my favorite games to date, I can’t tell you how many times I played that game start to finish. I love Hakuoki to death but not focusing much on the war aspect doesn’t bother me as long as there is plenty of angst and romance! I really hope we start getting more older titles too. We need a good mix of new and older ones for English releases. I am dying to play Nil Admirari still, not to mention Clock Zero and now Toki no Kizuna is getting ported to Switch in Japan and I need it lol especially since I never got to hear the voices or music when I first played it thanks to NTT Solmare.

    1. Hey fellow Three Houses enjoyer!! I’ve played that game so many times too! omg an absolute gem! While I don’t think Battlefield Waltz is the same as Three Houses, the common route did give a similar-ish vibe to it because of the school setting lol the story and routes were pretty different and pretty varied though! The cgs were super nice tbh, i kept coming back to the gallery section just to look at them! haha
And yep, agreed! I do hope the trend of companies picking up older titles ported to the switch continues! Hope you enjoy the game! 🥰

Me on the 8th of April on my way download Battlefield Waltz from the Nintendo E-Shop 🤭

Thank you so, so much dear Chlo for the review for my most anticipated Otome Game of the year!

I was hoping for a minimum rating of 8 out of 10 hearts and was glad when I realized during reading that you love this game so much 🥺

Really, it is so reassuring that my gut feeling was right and you, my favorite blogger for Otome Games, had a great time with a game I am so hyped for!

That way, I feel a precious connection and know for certain that there are other people as crazy as me when it comes to being excited for a game with gorgeous CGs and thirsting over handsome fictional characters with amazing voice actors 😏

Last but not least do allow me to point out a minor spelling mistake, dear Chlo: You wrote the name Serazar as Serazer with a second “e” right next to the voice actor, Junji Majima.

Thank you again for your efforts and wholesome reviews, I really love your writing style 😚

Best wishes from Carmen from Austria 🇦🇹

Hope you’re enjoying the game atm!! ❤

  5. I was debating on whether to pick this up or not, but this review finally settled it. Guess I’ll stop by my local game store after work tomorrow for it! Always been a bit of a curious fan of older Otome titles anyway 😁

  6. This wasn’t on my radar, especially because of my ginormous backlog of everything (games, books, otome games). But I can always change my mind for a great game and this sounds right up my alley! Especially how you ranked the main character because I really love Byakuya from Olympia Soiree too.

  7. This review made me buy the game immediately and I have no regrets so far!

I love the setting and there are SO MANY CHARACTERS WITH PORTRAITS AAAHH! ❤️ Almost makes me wonder if otomes have gotten a bit lazy with their NPCs in the last 10 years. 😂

I’m very hyped for Lan’s character growth and cannot wait until she becomes a boss. (That better happen! 😤)

  8. i liked the game overall. I am going to be annoying and comment on one thing. The armor these people have including most of the guys, and esp Ignis, doesn’t protect anything. Only Wilhelm as an adult has a somewhat reasonable protective armor on. One well placed snip and Ignis will have no armor at all. It’s more of a liability at that point. To be fair, this is not the only game with impractical and sexy for the sake of being sexy armor especially for women. The enemies all have better armor in this game.
