SYNOPSIS

About a year has passed since Akari Amasawa started her new job as a designer at Estario, a mobile app maker. While she doesn’t dislike her job, she’s not deeply passionate about it either. After her yearly performance review, she’s given the opportunity to join the Estarci team.

The company’s namesake app, Estarci is a news app that made a big splash when it launched but has since fallen behind rival apps, including apps run by Estario itself. Management has decided to give the app one last chance before shutting it down for good, and Akari and all of her new co-workers will need to give it their all to save the app from the chopping block.

Will Akari find true love? Will she find what it is she wants to do in life? Will the app get shut down? Wait, was Akari only given this opportunity because the company was looking for an excuse to fire her?!

Japanese illustrator Fuji Rito, the main illustrator behind Lover Pretend, is also the primary artist responsible for the character design and main CG illustrations in Sympathy Kiss. The game’s character sprites were definitely a sight for sore eyes. The variation of outfits was definitely brilliant, and I have pretty much enjoyed most of the *thirsty* CGs the game offers. Sympathy Kiss’s OST and BGMs were also fantastic, though it’s nothing to write home about, in my opinion.

If you’re a fan of limited editions, I definitely recommend getting Idea Factory International’s LE set for this game, as it comes with some really cute and nifty items befitting the game’s “office romance” theme! You can check out my unboxing video below if you’re curious what items are included inside the LE!

MAIN CHARACTERS AND ROUTES

This game has a total of eight routes: six main routes and two not-so-secret routes, which you’ll stumble upon one way or another during a blind playthrough. The only story that’s locked is Shuya’s, which becomes playable only after finishing your first LI route.

There are no route orders recommended by the devs, and I personally believe that a ‘route order‘ doesn’t matter much in this game. So, feel free to wing it however you like. The game does offer some small non-spoilery hints about the two secret routes. In any case, if you do prefer to follow a play-order regardless, my soft recommendation would be: Mitsuki → Kohei → Yoji → Rokuro = Secret Route #1 → NoriSecret Route #2 → Shuya. The flow of this suggested order basically follows a trajectory from the heroine working within her company to her work outside of it. I also think Rokuro and Secret Route #1 should be played back to back for plot reasons, but that’s just my opinion.

WALKTHROUGHS

MITSUKI SAOTOME

  • red headed genki but….😑😒
  • sweet tooth

Mitsuki is in-charge of Estarci’s planning and development. Although still young, he’s considered a genius hitmaker for consistently coming up with excellent ideas and interesting projects. He’s an intelligent individual with a carefree attitude that can sometimes rub people the wrong way. However, despite this, he remains quite friendly, and even though people may complain about him, they still find him amicable nonetheless.

I started this game with Mitsuki because it’s a rule of thumb to start every otome game with a red-headed genki. (jk).😂 Granted, I was genuinely expecting the typical genki route for this one, but boy oh boy, was I wrong…😅

Let me start with the positives first and say that I really like how Mitsuki was not all talk and that he can really work in great detail, exceeding everyone’s expectations in the company. And y’know what, I really respect co-workers like that. So, even if you come across as overbearing, as long as you can consistently produce SSS in all your projects, you get a free pass from me! I think I’ve also learned to like Mitsuki as an NPC in general; he was really good in Rokuro’s route as well as in any other routes… but his own.💀

To be fair, the game describes him as “having an attitude that can rub people the wrong way” and that’s exactly what happened in this route,😂 he rubbed me the wrong way that I pretty much remained indifferent all throughout his story. So, sasuga writers, I guess?!😂 There’s also some forced angst shoved into this route that made me roll my eyes hard, and his backstory, to be frank, was lackluster. So yeah, this route was my least fav in the entire game.

⬇️ Spoilers

If it really wasn’t for Gakuto Kajiwara, who I’m a big fan of, I probably would’ve skipped most of this route. Mitsuki’s overbearing attitude was way too much for me, and I feel bad for how poorly he treated Akari. His backstory was also kind of a drab? I mean, the high school bullying stemming from an app he created seemed out of nowhere. Are all the kids in his high school this boneheaded to pin the blame on him? And don’t get me started on this fake Takerude Sasazuka poser, Esaka, who’s still hung up on his BS. These are supposed to be grown-ass men in modern day society, but they act so immature and childish that it honestly resembles what most men with inflated egos are like IRL.😂 It ticked me off, I’m sorry! (cackles)😂

On the other hand, I do admire Mitsuki’s work ethics, which kind of mirrored my own, and its so uncanny saying this right now.😂 TBH, in the corporate world, keeping to yourself, and filtering out what others say about you, so long as you can do your job right, and flawlessly at that, is the way to go, imo! Last but not the least, the smut was alright here!😝

P.S. If you’re a completionist and ended up not liking Mitsuki’s route, I recommended to play him first just to get him out of the way. Don’t let this route sour your experience, I promise It’ll get better! 😂

KOHEI MINATO

  • tsundere
  • love bites?🫦

Kohei Minato joined the team six months ago after being recruited from another department, and he was promptly assigned to work on Estarci. Despite being older than Akari and Mitsuki, he regards both as his seniors (having to call them “senpai” most of the time). He can be a little cold upfront, but he gets the work done and appears to be very motivated in the office.

I couldn’t exactly recall the last time I had a taste of Umehara portraying a tsun tsun character, so his flustered baritones in this route were certainly a treat! In all honesty, this route’s *plot* was substandard and mediocre at best, but I’ve gotta say that I surprisingly enjoyed it because of Kohei and Akari’s interactions. While Kohei is your typical tsundere, he’s also the scheming type and he loves to get a reaction from the heroine, which I thought made their dynamic so good! There were definitely moments in this route where you’d go “hehe“, 🤭 & giggle on the side. The heroine, Akari, was also a little extra here; especially during her drunken moments.😏In addition, in contrast to Mitsuki’s route where they were always working even on dates, I love that in Kohei’s route, he and the heroine actually spent quality time together and did something other than work. All in all, not a bad route per se, provided you can overlook the anticlimactic office drama plot they attempted to weave into the story.🤷‍♀️

On a different note, the smut in Kohei’s route was extra goooooood! My goodness! They did it until the break of dawn! Why is it always the silent types that possess the stamina of Jason Momoa?!

⬇️ Spoilers

Kohei is the type of character that starts off reserved but gradually opens up to you – its more on the warmer side of the tsundere sphere which, I guess, is my favorite type of tsundere!😂 The romance in this route was quite simple, and I enjoyed it for what it was. The office drama here however, was pretty substandard. The antagonist Doi, wasn’t exactly that threatening, or rather, was not written as threatening as how they tried to portray him in the story. So, in the back of my head, I kept thinking, why the hell didn’t Kohei just talk to Kobase about his situation in the first place, or why couldn’t he get the cops involved? Clearly, he was being blackmailed, and this was definitely workplace harassment. Plus, judging from the sprites, Kohei is technically huge and bigger than Doi; he looks more threatening than the asshole blackmailing him. 😂 The lack of nuance on why Doi was suddenly *so scary* didn’t sit right with me. 🤷‍♀️ To add more, the conflict in this route was also resolved too conveniently when, in real life, Doi would’ve been spending a couple of years behind bars, and a big lawsuit would’ve awaited Kohei, plunging his family into even more debt. I was surprised that even in his other endings, there wasn’t any of that. Perhaps playing countless of bad endings, made me too cynical here?😅 His “Best/Perfect” ending where he quits Estarci and wants to start his own Indeed dot com also felt a bit middle-of-the-road.🤷‍♀️

On a different topic, I believe his smut scenes with the heroine was one of the spicier ones in this game. The CG was hot, and their bedroom activities, needless to say is giving (Orasowa) Tokisada a run for his money! Why is it always the shy boys that seem to have the endurance of a horse? They practically went at it until sunrise! Holy cow!😳 or should I say, Holy OX! in this case (cackles)😏

YOJI KOBASE

  • workaholic, erotic 👀
  • best boss

Yoji is Estarci’s director who takes the lead in its renewal project. He is trusted by the President of Estario, and he’s handpicked each and every member of his team, including the heroine. He is very workaholic, and his private life is almost invisible. With his tough demeanor and stern tone, he is feared within the company.

Okitsu as the stern and sexy megane boss is such a good combo, isn’t it? I went into this route with zero expectations, other than, well… that! Let’s be real, here!😏 (cackles) On the contrary, I was taken aback by how good the first half of this route is. Akari being overworked and making huge blunders in the company, getting constantly reprimanded by her superior, was too REAL. I felt all of it! And despite Kobase having an uptight, tough nature as a boss, he was very kind and considerate to Akari, and still recognized her hard work. Almost the perfect boss to have in the corporate world, if you ask me! And no, they don’t exist in real life, sadly!😂

Albeit extremely cliche, I loved the trope they used here to fuel Akari and Kobase’s closeness (read spoiler section if you’re curious). Unfortunately, the work conflict in this route was very uninteresting to me. Again, a lot of conflicts and forced angst seem to get thrown out of nowhere to move the plot forward, and I really didn’t care for it, to say the least. It was the romance and the relationship of the heroine with Kobase that I was really invested in. And speaking of which, the fanservice in this route was on the money! I feel like this route is going to be a fan favorite for that aspect alone!😏

⬇️ Spoilers

First of all, forced cohabitation is one of the most cliche tropes in otome games, but they work stupidly well most of the time, ending up as a guilty pleasure for many, myself included! Ha! 😏 It was also very refreshing to see Kobase’s POV in this route. Who would’ve thought he can be such a soft worrywart? I especially loved how he thoroughly cleaned his entire house before inviting MC (Akari) to temporarily live with him! That was such a gap moe move, I love it!

This route also showcases a very thirsty MC. I mean, she gets even more h0rny in other routes (keep reading below if you’re curious which route she’ll start acting up lol), 🤭 but Akari in Kobase’s route was also rather bold and brazen. Oh boy, they did it so many times in here, and I ain’t complaining one bit! I support it even! Go embrace those hormones, girl!

My only gripe in this department, is that his supposed to by SPICY CGs looked rather weird?? And it distracted me a lot of times from the smut! What is up with that?! 😂

ROKURO YOSHIOKA

  • modern day ouji-sama
  • best boy! 😭

Rokuro Yoshioka is the heir of the IT Company, Tempesty, a chief business partner of Estario. A lot of women are drawn to him for his good looks, intelligence, and wealth, yet his current focus leans more towards work than love.

As a Sei-chan biased, Rokuro was the character I was most excited about in this game, and I actually planned on saving his route for last because I wanted to end my gameplay with a massive brain rot with him at the center of it!😂😂😂 But alas! I couldn’t resist and dove into his story early on, and ngl, I kind of regret it! (laughs) Rokuro was just too perfect, but what’s the catch? I was literally on edge because, in most games, the “perfect” character normally turns out to be a gigantic red flag in the end. Turns out, my doubts were totally out of place! Rokuro was genuinely the ideal love interest! Perfect is an understatement; the dude was damn flawless! And his route? It was peak kdrama!😩👌 I absolutely enjoyed it from start to finish.

⬇️ Spoilers

Rokuro was also Akari’s childhood sweetheart! And as cliche as this sounds, their story actually worked well for me. It didn’t feel contrived or forced, and I enjoyed how both Akari and Rokuro reciprocated their feelings for each other equally. Despite their different social statuses (which the game brilliantly explores), I loved how both of them put their trust in each other against all odds. The foundation of their relationship was literally their MUTUAL TRUST. It felt safe and secure to know that Rokuro’s love for Akari would never falter, no matter what. The same goes for Akari. She really fought for her man and did not give up.😤 It felt incredibly refreshing to see how much the two trusted each other through a myriad of challenges!

What I also appreciated in Rokuro’s route was how he immediately addressed the issue with his parents setting him up on blind dates to the heroine, and even thoroughly explained his unwanted arranged marriage to Akari so she wouldn’t get the wrong idea. He’s just genuinely too kind and sweet! MY GAAAWD! I CANNOT! 😩😭 I melted when they started making out in the car, and I wished they would’ve gone all the way (cackles) 😂 but sadly, Rokuro was too much of a gentleman for this kind of raunchy act…😔 ***It’s also funny how the heroine was even frustrated herself, the girl gets it! LOL

Moreover, I adored how all of the LIs were very supportive of the heroine in this route. I think I enjoyed the part where they tried to offer her a support system; it was very heartwarming! This was also the route where Mitsuki Saotome shined! 😂 I honestly loved him here. Why can’t he be this likable in his own route? 😂

NORI TAINAKA

  • male wife
  • sugar baby

Nori is the young man whom the heroine found collapsed in the streets. With his persuasive puppy-dog eyes, he talked himself into staying at her apartment. He’s a couch surfer and normally exudes a soothing vibe.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of Nori, nor the tropes in this route, and even after finishing his story, my opinion of him remained unchanged.😂However, I did find myself getting pretty invested in his story, regardless. Perhaps it was because I was eager to learn more about Nori’s personal history—Who is he? Why is he homeless? 😂I found myself intrigued during the first half of his route. However, after his *big reveal* which turned out to be somewhat underwhelming😅 (for me, at least), I lost interest in his story halfway through. What I did like about Nori as a character, though, was that he was such a good friend not only to the heroine but to everyone. He genuinely cares, and he’s naturally perceptive of people. He can read the room and even knows when to skedaddle if he thinks he’s stepping on boundaries. That, to me, is always a commendable trait!

Needless to say, the saving grace for this route was his lovey-dovey relationship with the heroine and, of course, the smut! I just feel like people will forgive a character because he brings good smut to the table, no? 😂 Apparently, he ranked second in Japan’s popularity poll, and I was kind of mad knowing that the two DILFs got shafted last. This is me typing this atm, with a stink eye!🤨

⬇️ Spoilers

This is probably a “me” thing, but I just couldn’t get behind Nori’s character. He got way too comfortable easily mooching his way into the heroine’s life, and ironically, it made me uncomfortable. He’s a professional freeloader who jumps from one woman’s place to another in order to get by. In exchange, he does their laundry, chores, and provides emotional support. This definitely screams sugar baby, right? 😂 I also can’t believe that he didn’t engage in any physical relationships with his previous sugar mommas, especially considering there was this one spriteless NPC who suggested he stay at her place ‘again,’ with an offer that he can ‘do what he wants’ to her. In the back of my mind, I’m just thinking; how many women has he slept with just to have a roof over his head? Ngl, that was such a turn-off!

I had to actually retrack the game and somehow play it with the focus towards seeing Nori overcome his past traumas and learn how to grow with his lover. This way I was able to thoroughly enjoy his route with an open mind. On a different note, I did like how Nori is extremely skilled with pillow talks and this somehow gives him this sort of relaxing vibe that you can easily confide in. I feel like this is why Akari (and his previous sugar mommas) was able to take him in so easily.

To be honest, despite Nori not being my cup of tea, I still enjoyed this route for what it is! If you’re also a fan of KENN, he really did this character justice, so I think that’s also something to look forward to!

SHUYA USUI

Shuya Usui is the owner and bartender at Evergreen, a restaurant and bar with a great vibe located near Estario.

This is it ya’ll! A proper dilf route! It had been 84 years since we got Kaoru Rindo in CE, and I wouldn’t really count Cef in Benibana, since that game was old.

But ermahgerd! This route is feeding every dilf-deprived atom in my entire being! My crops are suddenly watered, my skin is cleared, my wig is snatched, my depression is cured! God bless, whoever put this route together, you deserve a raise! I was very happy about this route because they handled the age gap between Shuya and the heroine so well. There was consent in just about everything. In fact, there was so much consent that the heroine ended up being extremely frustrated all the time! 😂

I have to admit, Shuya’s story took its time to rev up, but the moment when MC (Akari) started acting up, that’s when this route got me hooked! It had me gasping-yelping all the time; the girl was just down bad for Usui. And I was right there with her! I had a huge grin on my face in every chapter because I kept anticipating what she was going to do next. 😂

On a more wholesome note, Shuya was also an exceptional love interest. He was very kind, very calm and very mature. I was blown away by how he handled Akari’s advances. He was remarkably tactful, and you could clearly see how he was very careful with his responses to the heroine’s impulsiveness. Consent is indeed the sexiest thing ever! Honestly, this was a great route altogether! Definitely a main course for dilf lovers, like myself!

⬇️ Spoilers

“ALL MEN ARE WOLVES” BUT NOT IN USUI’S ROUTE! NOPE! MC Akari, was the wolf here! You can’t change my mind!😂 (cackles)

She was just so down bad for Usui, I was cackling hard when she started getting extremely thirsty for him that she offered to be his cleaning lady just so she could visit his apartment!

Akari after work, on her way to Usui's apartment
Akari after work, on her way to clean Usui’s apartment

I’m dead serious! She is the thirstiest in this route! If being his personal cleaning lady wasn’t enough, she even offered to wash his hair and help him take baths! My goodness, girl, control your hormones! (I’m taking this out of context, I know!) 😂 I was howling the entire time. I did not expect this route to go hard on the fanservice! How Shuya was also constantly rejecting her was kind of alluring because that only fueled Akari to act out more. I was legit screaming without the S, when she was finally able to convince Usui to do the deed with her.😂😂😂 And hooboi! that scene was super hot! I might play this route again to cope! (cackles)

SECRET ROUTE #1

⬇️ Spoilers

YOFY

  • y a b a i
  • 🚩🚩🚩
  • If you’ve played Rokuro’s route before YOFY’s, you can for certain already connect the dots on their relationship. The blonde hair essentially gave it away! 😂 As for my impression of YOFY – Well…He was young, very pretty, voiced by Soma Saito, and his nonchalance was kind of endearing. What could go wrong? I was fully invested in his story until it unfolded the way it did! Ha! 😂

No, I did not forsee him to become this game’s resident yandere in the making! I was shook! 😱 I knew something was off about him during the second half of his route, but I never expected him to go full-blown yand to the point of stalking and drugging Akari. If this type of character isn’t your cup of tea, you will absolutely hate this route. It’s filled with red flags firing on all cylinders!

As a disclaimer, I do love me some yandere characters, so I enjoyed the sudden turn of events in YOFY’s route. The twist didn’t seem distasteful to me; in fact, I loved how you could see the gradual change in YOFY’s demeanor the moment he saw Akari hanging out with the guys from her workplace. At first, he was acting clingy, then it shifted to being overprotective and wanting to walk Akari home all the time. His last trigger, which pushed him to his extreme yandere measures, was seeing Akari hang out with Rokuro, his own brother, the person he envied the most.

I liked how this route was written tbh, because you’re literally experiencing the changes YOFY undergoes. It wasn’t just an out-of-the-blue scenario shoved in your face. You’re actually witnessing him change before your eyes, with each event in his later chapters giving you hints of YOFY’s dark nature. I also loved how Soma Saito portrayed YOFY’s character. The confession he made to the heroine, revealing he was her stalker all along, was bone-chilling! I couldn’t get it out of my head. That scene was peak!

YOFY’s character can also be interpreted as someone who desperately longed for human connection, leading to his judgment and awareness of boundaries being clouded. Having experienced little social interaction before, he seemed to struggle with understanding how to form a healthy relationship as well as manage his emotions appropriately. This lack of experience may have exacerbated his tendencies to become overly attached and possessive. Given that this was his first relationship, I think he went off the rails with Akari because he didn’t exactly know what to do. Kudos to Akari giving him a piece of her mind though! And I loved how that made him rethink his actions.

In retrospect, I loved how the ending part of this route concluded with Akari saying she and YOFY will grow together as partners because there really needs to be a lot of significant growth necessary in this kind of relationship.

    SECRET ROUTE #2

    ⬇️ Spoilers

    TSUKIHIKO HIGA

  • DILF #2!
  • Certified Daddy I’d like to F….lirt with 🤭
  • WHAAAT?! A DILF TORIUMI CHARACTER! HOLY MACARONI!! What have I done to deserve all the graces bestowed upon me?!🥺🤲

I am so over the moon with this route! There’s just something about Higa that got me smitten right off the bat! Also, this is technically the first time I’ve played a route centered on romancing a single dad, and it feels so refreshing because it’s a new territory I’ve yet to explore, rarely seen in (localized) otome games. Not only that, but I also feel that this route was carefully thought out. A relationship with a single parent comes with very complicated circumstances, and I was really taken by surprise by how well this route explored and handled all the possible conflicts for Akari and Higa’s relationship.

First, you have Hinata, Higa’s five-year-old son. Perhaps he was seeking a maternal figure, since he seems to have taken a liking to Akari right from the jump. Then, there’s the situation with Higa’s deceased ex-wife, which initially made me feel anxious at first because the ‘dead ex-girlfriend’ trope tends to peeve me most of the time, in otome games. However, this route tackled this issue exceptionally well! I was legit shocked by how good this route turned out, to be honest! I admired how maturely Akari handled everything; she didn’t act jealous of the ex-wife but instead respected her place and even supported Higa in raising his son as a widower.(I definitely vibed with her in this route the most) Additionally, I loved how Higa discussed to Hinata about wanting to get serious with Akari, explaining that he loved Hinata’s mom and would always regard her as someone special to him, but also wanted to be with Akari, as a man. It was so mature and moving to see this father-and-son conversation unfold. Gosh, seeing Akari and Higa’s relationship develop in such a healthy direction warmed my heart.🥺

Also, It was kind of funny to randomly learn that Higa was a former idol back in his day, who left the limelight because he fell in love. This route seems to be hitting all my soft spots and favorite tropes! Sure, that silly conflict with the sasaeng fangirl harassing him was a little over the top, but I’m glad it only lasted for a mere second. I think it’s also worth mentioning how Higa was such a walking green flag! He’s hardworking, handsome, affectionate and would do anything for his family! SERIOUSLY, HE’S THE MAN TO GET IT DONE! ACTUALLY, HE ALREADY BEEN DONE IT, THAT’S WHY HE HAS A SON LOL!😂😂😂

The part where Higa directly confessed to Akari with marriage in mind, was so true to his character!🥺 He didn’t beat around the bush and I love him for that! My only gripe in this route was that THERE WAS NO SMUT! HOW RUDE!😡😡😡 *flips table*

    AKARI AMASAWA (Main Heroine)

    • a.k.a YOU! 🫵
    • thirsty af

Akari is your eyeless protagonist, who has zero spoken lines which, ngl, took me a while to get used to. This approach seems to stem from the developers intending for this game to have a more “yume” (self-insert) approach. However, I’d argue that the only factor tipping the scales toward making me think of her as a self-insert MC is the lack of dialogue. Her own thoughts were profoundly articulated during the game, and more often than not, she is her own person with a distinctly established personality.

To my surprise, I really enjoyed Akari as the protagonist in Sympathy Kiss. She was hardworking, smart, bold, and very mature! I’d like to emphasize ‘mature’ because this trait really stood out to me about her. In almost all the routes, if any miscommunication happened, she would immediately attempt to hash it out, so misunderstandings never dragged. Akari was also very proactive in resolving conflicts with her love interest. It was refreshing to see her take the initiative and be the first one to address their relationship’s issues.

I also loved how she can get a bit h0rny at times. Her thirstiness really tickled my funny bone so much that I found myself mostly cheering for her the entire game. She was very relatable and authentic, and as a working adult woman myself, I was able to vibe with her easily.

    SYSTEM AND LOCALIZATION

The localization for Sympathy Kiss was pristinely done, and I have no complaints in this department. Its user interface adheres to the standard Otomate interface. There are, however, a few added features to the gameplay, such as the “emotion select system,” which basically involves selecting different emotions when reacting to the LIs during your playthroughs. These emotional choices range from happiness, anger, sadness, etc. and sometimes they alter the course of the narrative during your conversations with the characters.

Additionally, there’s the RiNG feature, which allows the MC to exchange messages and engage in conversations with her LIs. While this feature isn’t entirely new, as we’ve seen it adapted in several popular games in the past, such as Variable Barricade and Collar x Malice (to cite a few examples), I think it’s still a nice touch to kind of bring about the ‘modern-day office romance’ vibe element into the gameplay.

Lastly, I think the spin-off stories (which come up at the end of each chapter) were a delightful addition to the story episodes. It was quite interesting to see the POVs of our gents during certain peak scenes in their respective stories.

    OVERALL THOUGHTS

Despite having eight love interests, I was surprised by how quickly I finished this game. It took me approximately 40-45 hours to complete and unlock everything. I mostly played on auto-mode, so in theory, you can probably finish the game in less than 40 hours.

This title offers three different endings for each route: the “Perfect” ending, which is technically the best outcome of the story, and you have the “Love” and “Work” Ending. Interestingly, the game doesn’t have any bad endings; almost all of the story conclusions end on a more positive note regardless of which ending you unlock.

Sympathy Kiss is a game with a theme centered on modern-day office romance. It explores various topics concerning adult relationships and portrays mature romance in contemporary society. All the stories have low stakes, in the sense that nothing grandiose happens that would leave you spiraling on edge; instead, the events are more relaxed and easygoing in nature. No conflicts were unnecessarily dragged, and the game was very consistent in maintaining a lighter and more laid-back tone. This game was also developed by the same team behind Lover Pretend, so you’ll notice a somewhat similar approach in terms of simplicity and the use of effective cliche tropes.

MC Akari, asking the right questions on first dates….😏

I think what I appreciated the most was that although the game offers you eight routes to tackle, none of them felt shoehorned. More times than not, when a game crams you with 8 love interests, you’d find most of the stories to be quite repetitive and the plot overly compressed to a point where you just couldn’t wait for it to end. In Sympathy Kiss, however, it was just the right sizable portion of everything. While romance undoubtedly took center stage, the office drama subplot also added depth to the storytelling, (though if I’m being honest, I pretty much just viewed it as more of a backdrop, or a catalyst, in moving the story forward.)😂 Furthermore, I was also pretty satisfied with how the game makes sure to shower you with plenty of sugar and steamy content at the end of each story.

Sympathy Kiss is rated CERO D (+17). So yes, there’s going to be some light smut in this title, but it’s not overly suggestive either. If you’re looking for something explicit, though, you won’t find that here!

Of course, the game is not without its flaws. Some routes were written pretty well, while some were pretty meh.🤷‍♀️ As far as the stories went, my favorite route would definitely be Rokuro’s . His route was like watching a B-grade kdrama, – it really indulged me & my chaebol romance fantasies!😂 Though admittedly, secret route #2, came pretty close as well, but for a different reason!👀 That said, he was my second fav!

On the other hand, my favorite route as far as the smut goes,🤭 was Shuya’s! (I know…pretty obvious right?)😂 Kohei Minato takes second place, because you know how it is with the shy boys right?😏

    Character Rankings:

    Rokuro > Secret Route #2 > Shuya > Secret Route #1 > Yoji = Kohei >>>>> Nori >>>>>>>>>>>>> Mitsuki

I would also like to highlight that as someone who belongs to the older spectrum of the fandom, I am very grateful that this game showcased wonderful older gent love interests. 🥰They weren’t just there for the sake of having romanceable older men; their routes were all carefully thought out and handled with care. I really hope this becomes a trend in future localized otome games!

WARNING TMI: Reflecting on the romance portrayed in this game, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of familiarity – almost uncomfortably so! It was as if the characters were drawn straight from the pages of my own colorful dating history back in the heyday (cackling). All of the LIs’ personalities resemble traits of your typical modern-day dating partner, and goodness me! were they all too real for comfort?! They are your typical dudes you’ll see in different walks of life. One you may encounter on Tinder, or if you’re older, OKC! 😂😂😂 (laughs) It’s so amusing and uncanny at the same time!😂 Sometimes it was hard to disassociate even, which is crazy to me because I’ve always been able to separate IRL and fiction. This is probably why I couldn’t see myself liking Nori Tainaka that much despite being a fan favorite who topped second in the game’s character polls. I’ve seen way too many dudes who loves to mooch off a woman’s coin, so I was really squicked out for the most part of his route. On the flip side, this is also probably why I loved Rokuro so much; because he is too perfect; and “too perfect” does not exist irl. So characters who remain in the realm of fantasy are easily handpicked by my brain as the best boy!😂

Do I recommend this game? YES.
Needless to say, I had a blast playing Sympathy Kiss. This game was a lot of fun! It’s a very chill, modern-day romance-themed otome game with plenty of spicy fillings that are sure to indulge your guilty pleasures. Honest to god, I really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere the game immerses you in. It certainly has a very laid-back charm that I easily vibed with, making it the perfect game to pick up if you’re in the mood for unwinding and indulging yourself in adult romance.

If you’re someone who regularly rotates visual novels, you can play this one as a palate cleanser in between or after a more emotionally demanding story-based game. It’s a lighter read, so anyone who appreciates romance in a simple modern-day setting will surely like this title. With its stunning art and alluring voice acting, the game is just so easy to enjoy! Lastly, this otome game carries a very optimistic tone throughout, so I feel like the best way to play it is to simply sit back, relax, and let the story do its thing!

    1. Ohhh I’ve been away from Otome for so long now, but I always check your blog for new reviews. Seeing this one, I may have to buy it! I also enjoy some proper dilfs and to say we’re actually getting some is incredible! I am so excited for this!

    2. I was waiting when you’ll post your review before I buy this game! Guess who bought it just minutes ago! Haha I was on the fence about this at first because of the heroine not having a face but knowing she has a personality gives me hope! Not that I dont mind a self-insert heroine myself!

I dont mind spoiling myself so I took a peek at the spoiler tabs for the secret routes and number #2 was just the push that I needed to make me hit the purchase button on the limited edition haha you articulated this review so well and now I want to experience it! I cant wait for my copy to arrive! Aaaah Thank you for your service! I always stalk this website anticipating new reviews and posts from you! It’s a happy place for me! 🙂

I was hoping Chlo would rate this low so I don’t have to buy it! But now I just placed an order via Amazon!🤣 I’m getting the standard edition only since I’m not interested with the office items! I think they are pretty tho!

I also like this website! Its a nice safe haven for us girlies to freely simp for our 2d men😝

    3. Dear Chlo,

Thank you for your time and efforts to provide us yet again with an amazing review!

I am not going to buy this game immediately on the release day because I am currently happily replaying CxM as well as Code:Realize.
I replay the whole Code:Realize franchise every year, it seems to possess some kind of magic that has me enchanted and calls me back to these charming characters and their absolutely awesome voice actors👌🏻

That being said, I have to trouble you (again) with a correction.
In the second row of performances of KazuOki, you wrote Yoji a second time although you already introduced us to this handsome guy 🤭

Just stay the way you are Chlo, you and your work are a huge help ❤

And I am not only saying that because I am constantly in danger of walking on the path that leads to bad ends (on first playthroughs) 🙇🏻‍♀️

Last year was a very hard time for me and my family because my father passed away completely unexpected at the age of 64.

It may sound strange but it is an undeniable fact that playing the otome genre and reading your reviews for these games helped me coping with my sorrow.

So in all honesty, thank you Chlo, for choosing to write reviews for otome games and for using such a wholesome way for doing so.

You, too, are a best girl 👸🏼

Best wishes from Carmen from Austria 🇦🇹

      1. Hey Carmen! I’m so sorry for your loss!😔
I understand this completely as I went through the same with my parents a few years back. It is going to be a difficult healing journey, but I pray you’ll be able to manage the process each day! Coping with our hobbies was indeed a ton of help but also, I hope you can surround yourself w/ a good support system as that helps as well!

Thank you for you for your love and support throughout the years! We are all best girls together! ❤ 🫂 Take care!

    4. I have been SO excited for this game since it was announced. I set an alarm the day that it went on preorder and ordered the LE the minute it went on sale. I just got the notification today that my order has been shipped, which is great because your review just made me Even. MORE. Excited. I did take a peak at the secret LI’s just to see what they looked like and I am unbelievably excited for them.

Thank you so much for the wonderful review. I always love reading your reviews!

I’ve been hoping for a game like this for a while now. I really dislike bad endings, so I normally use guides to avoid them, but this time I might actually go in blind and see where I end up.

      1. I am the same way! I have intense dread when it comes to bad endings, even if I know that there is eventually a happy ending. I usually go through the bad endings first based on the walkthroughs, as sometimes certain routes or endings can only be unlocked if those are done first. But with titles like Code Realize, for some of the LIs, I ended up skipping the bad endings until I’ve completed the good and normal endings. I was on such a roll with the feel-good vibes of that game that I didn’t want to get interrupted with stupid bad endings. Of course, I did end up going back to do them later on just for the 100% completion CG, but it’s nice to see other players who feel the same way. I know some other people greatly enjoy bad endings, but they’re just not for me, and just a means to complete the game in its entirety. That’s why I haven’t completed Piofiore (love you Yang, but those bad endings drained me 😅) or Lover Pretend after all this time. The latter’s story itself isn’t too compelling or eventful, and there are so many trivial bad endings to top it off. I may revisit it eventually, but it’s definitely not on my priority list now. I think it’ll be nice to have a game with no bad endings (most Voltage otoge follow this format, but the lack of voice acting sometimes gets to me 😭) for a change. Definitely looking forward to Yoji, since I’m a sucker for the kuudere/tsundere megane characters.

    6. It’s so funny that these characters are already so familiar to me, without even having to play the game, because of a Reddit post of “Guess The Character’s Personality Based On Their Home Design” that someone posted maybe a year or so ago.

    7. Hi Chlo,
thank you for your great reviews and walkthroughs.
I was checking on a whim if you already have one for Sympathy Kiss because my copy should arrive tomorrow and was delighted to see you already posted a review 🙂
Im super hyped to play myself because the “cozy” setting and all the great seiyus especially Umehara and Toriumi are two out of my three top favourites.

    8. I read this review and it got me pretty excited to play the game, but for some reason it’s not showing up in the Australian eShop? Not even as a ‘coming soon’ entry. I can’t find any real info on what’s going on with its release in Australia, I just kinda assumed that it’d be the same as the US/EU release… 😞

    9. Just finished my playthrough! Higa was my #1 with Rokuro being a VERY close second!! And then our precious kuudere Minato 😌 I absolutely loved that a single dad was featured in this route but YES I AM SO BITTER HE DIDN’T GET HIS SEXY TIME, how dare he be cockblocked like that 😡😡😡
I love your blog and always use your walkthroughs. Thanks for keeping me laughing! 🩷

    10. I just started the game (with Mitsuki as u recommended) but there are things I cant get past like…why doesnt the MC talk directly? Its all in direct speech like she doesnt own her own voice…its weird to play like this >_<

    11. I stumbled on your website by accident looking up walkthroughs for piofiore and now I visit regularly! I love your reviews and I agree with your point of view on basically every game you play, haha! Thank you for reviewing this one, it was my deciding factor in buying it and now I am having a blast! I think Kobase has been my favorite route so far but Minato, my goodness you are so right about him! 🤣
