End of the Year Round Up Part 1 – Best and Worst of 2023

Hello and greetings to all MCs who are striving and thriving this year! It’s amazing how swiftly we’re approaching the end of 2023!Can you believe how quickly the days have passed? This year has undeniably been a boon to the otome community, with a lot of game releases and exciting announcements popping out of the blue like mushrooms. I am still in disbelief that we’ve come this far, but anyway, I’ve expressed this so many times in my newsletters already, so no use to repeat myself here!😅(laughs) Be that as it may, I have an important question for everyone though! How are our wallets faring?🤣💸

As tradition, it’s that time of the year, when I’ll be babbling on about my year-end review on all things, otome-related, along with some uninteresting personal musings and reflections for 2023. This time around, the post will be split into two parts, as trying to squeeze everything into one might make it a bit too lengthy. Prepare your snacks and teas; this first part is going to be entertaining (or at least, I hope it will be, lol).🤣

This year, I played 20 games in total: 14 I’ve completed, 10 I’ve reviewed, 3 I’ve stalled, and 3 I’ve dropped. Out of the 20 games I’ve played, 16 were otome games, lol – I mean, this was expected. 😂

  • BeniBana (Dropped) – this was a weird incident. Although it was not one of the games I was looking forward to playing this year, I did feel kind of hyped about it when it was announced. Admittedly, I have enjoyed Touya and Suren’s routes and even made walkthroughs for them. Then the other two routes happened: I was playing Ruzi’s route with a stink eye, but hey, some of his CGs were pretty, so I thought to myself, “Well, I think I can muscle through this”, and so I did. It was in Naran’s route that made me want to dunk my Switch in the toilet. I can’t really elaborate on why I was so disgusted with this route without spoiling anything, but yeah…no sir, not for me! (it’s not a trigger or anything but more like a pet peeve). I’ll probably give the game another go next year but I’m not holding my breath for it.
  • Toraware no Palm (Stalled)– I have been playing this game since 2022 and have always stalled because I had too many other games to play and was too tired to flex my no-brainer kanji skills (cackles).😂However, this year, I have finally finished Haruto’s route, (well, his first ending anyway) and I liked it! Hopefully, I can continue with the rest of the game next year.
  • Hana Awase – Finished Mizuchi and Himeutsugi’s volume!💪 My review will have to wait til’ I finish the other two volumes, and I think I’m too distracted atm to get through Karakurenai’s story, so that’ll have to wait until next year. Gomen ごめんなさい!! 🙇‍♀️
  • Mineko’s Night Market (Dropped) – this was a total letdown. I had been excited about this game since it was announced in 2015! I believe the pandemic hit the development pretty hard, causing progress to stall for a while. But, oh man, when the Switch port came out this year, it was sooooo buggy that it was unplayable. I tried my best to be patient with it. However, after experiencing 15+ crashes in 30 minutes of gameplay, dealing with more than 20 lags that required restarts, and severe audio glitches, it was an absolute nightmare; even with the patch that was supposed to fix these bugs. I believe they have patched the game again recently, but I don’t think I have the strength to give it another shot anytime soon.😢
  • The Ssum Harry’s Route (Dropped) – Despite my love for Harry and this game, I will unfortunately be dropping it and will not be continuing my review diary for Harry’s route. I have finished Harry’s 100 Days, and …it was not a good experience. It was partly my fault because I was time-traveling, wasting all that money and for what? The 100th day ended in the worst way imaginable, it discouraged me from touching the game ever again. I believe his final ending has been updated in the app as of recent, but I don’t feel like going back to it anymore.

Itabag Awards: Best and Worst Of 2023

Back by popular demand! With the number of releases we had this year, it would be a waste not to do my best and worst awards, aka Itabag Awards, aka whatever you want to call it—Otomege Edition Awards. 😂🏆 This year, I’ll be limiting entries once again to the new localized titles and console/mobile exclusives I’ve played. *Cracks knuckles* Let’s begin!

🛑 Disclaimer: This is all in jest and for fun, please do not take this seriously.

Best Heroine Of 2023

It’s a tie…once again! We are truly blessed with numerous stand-out protags in 2023. They were all best girls, honestly. But if I had to narrow down the ones that easily encapsulated me with their uniqueness, quirks, and charms. I’d have to say, two exceptional daughters have stood out in this department. Catarina Claes (My Next Life as a Villainess) was such a hilarious heroine. She may be dense and as oblivious as a seabed of rocks, but her quirkiness and unheroinelike attitude were the exact reasons why everyone’s gaga over her, including me! Kisa Tachibana (Jack Jeanne) was just, ugh, my goodness! She’s the best! Jack Jeanne was her story; she makes or breaks that game! Everything about her coming-of-age narrative was so raw and authentic that I was moved to tears just from watching her grow each and every play!

Worst Heroine of 2023

Hiyori Sena (Charade Maniacs) as much as I love all of my heroines, Hiyori really fell short compared to the other girls this year. Sometimes I would just chalk it up to her being the most basic b**** high schooler, but sometimes I’ just can’t help but be like… ‘Really, girl?

Best Tsundere of 2023

Last year, Tyril (Even If Tempest Dawning Connections) nabbed Best Route award in 2022 for his story in EiT, and this year he’s back, stealing the spotlight as the Best Tsundere for his route in Dawning Connections! There’s certainly an appeal to tsunderes with a whip no? But to be a tsun with a whip who’s also a beast in bed?! 👁️👄👁️ Hue hue hue! I– need my asthma pump!

Worst Tsundere of 2023

Tomose Banjo. (Charade Maniacs) Huh? Wait, is he even a tsundere? LOL HE’S NOT! I was just really looking for a way to give him a “worst” award. lmao😂 He was awful.Periodt.
Anyway, this award doesn’t count. This nomination is disqualified!

Best Kuudere of 2023

Ion (Radiant Tale) and Mizuchi (Hana Awase) Oh no! Another tie! The reason behind this is that I really can’t decide which one of them is better than the other! This has been a difficult pick too, as there were a lot of kuudere LIs this year that really stood out. But these two were just phenomenal. Their backstories, the depth of their suffering, and just how sweet and genuine they are, all around to the heroine were the basis of this decision.

Worst Kuudere of 2023
NONE

Best Genki Of 2023

Suzu Orimaki(Jack Jeanne)– Suzu-kun was an upstanding genki character in Jack Jeanne and should be the standard for genki characters in all otomes.😝 Ha! Love, love, love his character growth in his route and his genuine care for Kisa. I also adored how he didn’t care whether Kisa was a man or a woman. Love should, in itself, transcend gender, and I’m glad that more and more localized otome games today are starting to include this theme.

Worst Genki Of 2023

Akase (Charade Maniacs) I would like to apologize for the Akase enjoyers for this!😭 Story time: While writing my Virche review and inputting the voice works for Soma Saito in the VA section, ngl, I nearly overlooked this character. 😭 It bothered me because I sensed that I was missing something, and in the back of my mind, I thought, “Didn’t he (Soma Saito) voice two other LIs besides Yves this year?” 😭 Hence, the rationale for this award. By no means Akase nor his route was bad, he was just really forgettable.😪

Bias-Wrecker Of 2023

A bias-wrecker is simply the character who’s not even your oshi/best boi, but you end up brain-rotting over them instead! This year, it was Tomonari (Winter’s Wish) for me. I was very much dead-set on Yoichi in Winter’s Wish (who’s still my oshi in the game), but for some reason, Tomonari never escapes me, every time I think about some of my favorite tropes, his route always comes to mind. I guess I’m just generally weak for the devoted and overprotective type.😅

Best Cinamon Roll Of 2023

Mathis (Virche Evermore) – I don’t normally like the cinnamon roll baby boys, but Mathis holds a special place in my 🤍. After finishing Virche, I had to quickly clear out a shelf space so I could make a tiny shrine for my baby boo – he deserves it!

Best Route Of 2023

Another TIE — LMAO! I need to stop this! 😂😂😂
These are the only two (console) routes that I have brainrotted this year. Kai Mutsumi (Jack Jeanne), the Disney kuudere princess, had me bawling for hours; good lord, was that route a doozy! His dialogue at the end during the final performance with Kisa had me internally screaming – my love veins were about to burst! (cackling)😂. Rozy (My Next Life as a Villainess) completely took me by surprise in Hamefura. But damn, his route was so good that I legit took my time with it (despite my deadlines lol) because I didn’t want it to end.😭  Runner Up: Paschalia (Radiant Tale)

Worst Route Of 2023

Naran (The Crimson Flower that Divides) – I’m not even sorry for this pick. Naran’s route was the reason I dropped the game. If you’ve played Benibana, you’re prob thinking “What is Chlo on about? That was route was fine!” lol 😂😂😂 But hear me out…

🔽Spoilers

One of my biggest pet peeve is when a game forces the heroine to CHEAT! I would’ve been fine if this was a raunchy game like Joubachi or Mashou Megane where the story doesn’t take itself seriously, but not when the heroine was consistently portrayed as holier than thou, and then she starts screwing the pool boy and act all uwu innocent, like b*tch gtfo. I just can’t enjoy it, even in fiction. Infidelity is really unattractive to me, no matter what form it takes. I kinda wanna finish this game and review it just so I can shitpost about this route lol – prob not worth it!😂

Best Boy of 2023

As I’ve said in my review for Virche, Yves, to me, sets the standard as the ideal love interest in otome gamesIt’s funny, cause he wasn’t even a fav. of mine in the game, but he was truly the epitome of “best boi! Even Hugo agrees wholeheartedly!

Best Side Character Syndrome Of 2023

No, its not because of my bias for Takashi Kondo characters! Nope!🤪 (I think I said this before with last year’s awards on Tsugunobu -lmao!) 😂😂😂 But, in all honesty, Jinnia (Radiant Tale) embodies what I would want to see in LIs: an easy going, happy-go-lucky skincare freak, wine connoisseur. They’re just someone I can easily hang out with in real life!

Best DILF Of 2023

Lord Yoshimune Tokugawa (Winter’s Wish) hands down takes the thrown for 2023’s best DILF. That brusque commanding voice, that confident and poised demeanor and how he fearlessly lead the people to safety during blightfall attacks. OH NAUUR! 😩 💦 Yoshimune-sama, yamete kudesai!! *chokes on bread*

Worst DILF Of 2023

Balto (Radiant Tale) – I mean, I pretty much went 👁️👄👁️ the first time his sprite showed up. But yeah, I’m sorry the dude’s trash. He gets no redemption and I don’t think he needs one either. I may still collect him….

Best OST Of 2023

Jack Jeanne, hands down! The OST for this game alone deserves its high praise. Not only do its melodies and lyrics capture the story’s magic, but the way the characters sang every song with so much raw emotion imparted in every tune was a reason for me not to skip any of my favorite tracks in each play. Akira Kosemura’s collaboration with Sui Ishida is a masterpiece on its own. Sometimes, when I’m stressed and exhausted from work, I just come back to the game’s OST to recall the fond memories I had playing this game. Kisa’s theme is my healing place. 🥰

👜Itabags Made this Year👜

I made a Harumi (Lover Pretend) itabag around April, along with a video for it. July, I made Jack Jeanne Mustumi Kai’s Itabag, and September, I crafted Radiant Tale Jinnia’s itabag. I had plans to make a Kisa Tachibana (Jack Jeanne) ita pouch, but I became extremely busy with work this year and had neither the time nor the energy to be proactively creative. I hope next year I’ll be blessed with more free time for itabagging!

Not the most flattering photos (lol I have zero aesthetic sense in me) but here you go!

Favorite Ships 🚢

  • Tifalia and Paschalia (Radiant Tale) – the fact their names both end in ‘lia’ just means they are meant for each other loljk. While Vilio was my fav route in Radiant Tale, story-wise, I thought it was Paschalia’s that pulled so many romantic tropes that I was totally into. The angst, tension, and intensity in how both characters fought for their love during the last chapters were pretty up there! I was eating pretty good with this route! No crumbs nor time was wasted!
  • Kisa and Sou-chan (Jack Jeanne)– As much as I love Kai and his route, I realize I have enjoyed Kisa’s dynamic with Sou the most. Their relationship was a learning curve for both characters, and it was honestly moving to see them struggle, make mistakes, and grow from it within the story. The codependency that initially embraced their relationship and how beautifully it resolved at the end was *chef kiss*. Sou’s route was one of those stories that you actually think about in idle time and realize how much substance it had, more than you thought it did.
  • Suzuno and Yoichi (Winter’s Wish Spirits of Edo) – This relationship was very simple and perhaps a tad too cliché even. But it worked so well because of the timing. Suzuno and Yoichi’s romance was seamlessly woven into the narrative, occurring at the right moment and in the right context, and it felt neither forced nor added as mere plot filler. Like, no buildings needed to explode with the heroine collapsing and the love interest catching her, or anything of that sort, lol.😂 It was simply the “fake lover” trope that played up so well with Yoichi’s charm. Also, Suzuno and Yoichi just seem to have a natural chemistry; I can’t help but ship these two so hard!

OGOTY (Otome Game of The Year)

JACK JEANNE

Jack Jeanne is the only otome game, I have rated 10/10 this year. It’s been quite some time since I’ve rated a game such a high score, tbh. What’s funny is that while I already knew I’d enjoy this game,I didn’t foresee it to exceed my expectations by a wide margin. It’s such a nice feeling to be caught off guard like that, y’know! And it’s so satisfying to end your gameplay with a teary-eyed “Holy cow! That was good!” moment. All the grueling midnights spent on making those elaborate walkthroughs are so worth it for this game! (cackling) 😂😂😂

Avatar

This is probably a corny, cringey fun fact, but I was actually tearing up while writing my JJ review. Recalling my favorite moments from the game in each route and every play became such an emotional feat! lol, I don’t know why!😅 The popular phrase that goes, “I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me,” is exactly how I feel about Jack Jeanne. I laughed, I cried, and everything about it. The characters, stories, music, became a part of me! I wish I understood the magic behind this, but this is how I truly and wholeheartedly feel about this game. And it’s not every day that a piece of media leaves this kind of lasting impression on you.

Out of the sixteen otome games I’ve played this year, my top three are as follows:

  1. Jack Jeanne (10/10)
  2. Radiant Tale (8.5/10)
  3. Love and Deepspace (8.5/10)

Love and Deepspace was such an oddity because the game hasn’t even been released yet. 😂 But holy guacamole! I just want to express how freakin‘ good the romance is in this game. And no, I’m not talking about its fanservice (though that was good too, lol). I think I’m just stupidly burned out with surface-level romance in mainstream media these days. (I blame Netflix and the vast majority of Gen Alpha series that are trying to normalize skinship and sex as the paragon of “good” romance.) So when I come across the genuine ones that go beyond the superficial, conventional grand gestures of love (by western standards), I feel so refreshed!

Personal Ramblings and Reflections

What makes a romance tick?

For me, a good romance story stands out when it allows me to emotionally connect with the situations conveyed through the subtlest, tiniest details woven into the characters by the author. I always talk about this in my reviews, but to me, nuance is just as important as plot twists.

For example, in romcoms, I want to see the heroine fiddling around with her phone, going back and forth to see if her LI replied to her spontaneous, out-of-the-blue text. I want to witness the mix of excitement and anxiety as she muses and stresses out whether she made the right call by sending that text message. lol🤣

💗I love the slow buildups, the subtleties that go behind the scenes, like the small daily actions of the LIs, often done without the heroine’s knowledge, meant to make her feel comfortable, safe and often done with her best interest in mind.

Not an otome game, but one example I want to cite is from the Kdrama, CLOTY; when Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok went to North Korea’s town market and bought some smuggled South Korean skincare and conditioner for Yoon Seri.😂 Having overheard Seri whining on her own about not being able to do self-care, and whatnot, Captain Ri, in a spontaneous and caring gesture, acquires these items for her; all without Seri explicitly requesting it. 😂 The beauty of the scene lies in the fact that he did it on a whim, driven by genuine concern for Seri’s well-being, even if he wasn’t consciously aware of it himself.🥺😭

It’s the little things that make you feel warm, fuzzy, and sometimes even antsy and on edge, that make romance in just about any form of media a happy pill!

For angst, one example that comes to mind is Henri’s route in 1926. My god! The slow burn for that route just hits you with the right notes! Henri and Lili yearn for each other, yet their romance is stifled by their circumstances. The tension between them is palpable, even from just having their simple day-to-day conversations. Lili grapples with her suppressed feelings for Henri, and although he senses it, Henri refrains from making a move due to the trauma of his past—a past that inadvertently entangled Lili in something she shouldn’t be part of. The back-and-forth tension between these two characters was just soooooo gooood, and I vividly remember the impact, especially on Lili’s character. Her apprehension, nervousness, and edginess as she tries to decipher Henri’s complexities – I felt all of it!!😩👌The angst of that route still lives rent free in my head to this day!😂 And when they finally come together—when the time is right for them to finally couple (aka to copulate lol)😂—it feels incredibly earned and gratifying!😭

💗On the flip side, I’m also a sucker for tropes. I live for those unintentional curiosity glances, the drunken piggybacks, umbrella in the rain, the fated couple who knew each other when they were young but have forgotten, heroines getting sick and LIs nursing them back to health or vice versa, marriage contracts, fake lovers slowly realizing each other’s charms while fake dating, enemies-to-lovers stranded on a remote location and having to spend time together, heroines getting slightly scratched and LIs going berserk about it (lol)😂… the back hugs, the wrist grabs, confessions in the rain.  Like, bruh, I want all of those things! Give ’em ‘to me in my otoges, and I will profusely eat them all up!

Over the years, playing countless visual novels back to back, I don’t think my preferences in general have drastically changed? Well, on second thought, I have to admit I’ve grown a little tired of the last-minute confession scenes or the last-minute tight-knit wrap-ups of plots. If the climax of the story is so close to the end of the route, it means that the player has about 5 minutes to process what happened to the characters after. This isn’t really a deal-breaker for me per se, and in no way does it mean that this approach is bad. I just prefer stories to take their time to wrap everything up before half of the last chapter hits, giving you some sort of breathing room to think and hopefully feel the emotions and impact the author or writer was trying to convey.

I’ve also realized that I don’t really value sex or skinship in my otome games that much. Please don’t take this the wrong way; I’m not prudish or anywhere close to it to want to avoid smut. I love my smut and raunchy games and I play R18 games in my leisure when time permits (I have a whole backlog stash of them that I hope to get through next year). I just simply don’t believe explicit or suggestive content is necessary to make or break a game. I don’t necessarily need smut to find the game more engaging or “romantic”, if that makes sense. No kissing CGs? No problem!😂

BUT, I get it. Romance is subjective, no matter what, and I won’t preach about whether the modest emotional intimacy scenarios are better than those leaning towards more physical. To add to that, one of my closest friends who also plays otome games (read: Ive managed to lure into the rabbit hole) is the opposite of me. They don’t care much about the nuance, but they take priority in acquiring kissing CGs and fanservice, lol. No matter how captivating the story is, if the game lacks kissing CGs, they will immediately dunk it (lmao luv u, maiko-chan!)😂😂😘 And you know what, that’s fine too! Your preference in media is mainly a ‘whatever floats your boat’ situation — consume what makes you happy!💗

Holy cow! I have managed to ramble on and on… Oops!😂😂 I hope ya’ll still awake! (laughs) it’s time to answer some questions!

Avatar

If you are still reading this, congratulations! You have survived the first part of this post! 😂 I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas, and your holidays and holiday breaks have been blissful! The second part of my 2023 roundup will be posted before New Year’s! Thank you for your continued support for Otome Kitten!

The last part of this post will be the Q&A portion, where I’ll be answering some questions from my End of Year survey. If you have submitted a question, stick around for a bit! ha!

Q&A

As promised in my end-of-the-year survey, I’m committed to answering most of your questions, no matter how random (laughs). 😂As long as it doesn’t involve sharing my bank account or social security number, I will address each and every one of them!😤 For repeated and similar questions, collective answers will be provided.

Oh boy! Most of these questions actually made me wear my thinking cap! And it took me three days to answer all of them!(cackling) My brain is kind of obtuse atm, but I will try my very best to give some proper (hopefully) smart-like answers!😂 LOL

💀THE QUESTIONS💀

  • Do you think we will get any more R18 games localized?
🔽Answer

I believe we are already getting some titles next year?

The titles, I think, are Hime no Rakuen and Tsuki no Onna, Kawa no Tenshi, Kami Meku Toki – all of which will be on PC. Both titles are from the Japanese indie devs “succulent.” However, there haven’t been any follow-ups regarding their release dates, so I’m not sure whether they’ll be out in 2024 or not.

  • Is there any Japanese-only otome game you would love to see localized?
🔽Answer

Yoshiwara Higanbana. You can read my review for this game here.

  • What got you into otome?
🔽Answer

Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no Ceres mangas (and the anime) and pretty much all of Watase Yuu’s reverse harem creations were my bible! Their works have sparked my love for the reverse harem genre which eventually lead me to discovering otome games.

  • What was your favorite Route this year and Why?
🔽Answer

Kai’s Route (Jack Jeanne) and Rozy’s Route (My Next Life as a Villainess). As to why, I’ve answered this already in my itabag awards above.😂

  • Just curious, is there a reason why you close comments on previous posts? Also just curious, are you ever going back to finishing your unfinished walkthroughs for Bakamatsu Renka Shinsengumi, BeniBana, and/or create a walkthrough for Hana Awase?
🔽Answer

There was a time (perhaps 2-3 years back) that a user was binge-reading my blog and spamming all my reviews with comments containing links on where to download the games illegally. That was the reason I closed the comments section on posts that are more than 3 months old. Anyway, I have opened all comments for right now, but if this ever happens again, I may close it again lol 😂

As for the unfinished games, I may finish the walkthroughs for Bakurenka and Benibana. I will definitely review Hana Awase next year!

  • Favorite localization of 2023?
🔽Answer

Jack Jeanne in terms of story. But as far as the translations go, if that’s the question pertaining to, I would have to say RADIANT TALE!

  • Would you ever consider doing a list of the best of all time otomes? Maybe a separate list for indies?
🔽Answer

Given the continuous release of numerous games each year, it’s difficult to definitively say which ones qualify as the “best of all time”. However, for right now, my current ratings should suffice to identify the ones I’ve enjoyed the most. Regarding indie games, I’ve only really played a couple, so I may not be the fairest judge in that category. Perhaps, when I eventually retire from reviewing and blogging, I might consider making that as my last post. Heh.

  • What was your biggest wtf moment in a route this year?
🔽Answer

Futami’s route in Charade Maniacs!😂

  • Just wondering if maybe you have heard any news about Bustafellows 2 getting localized?
🔽Answer

There aren’t any news about it, sadly.

  • Do you play games in Japanese? If yes, how did you learn the language?
🔽Answer

Through casual self-learning, just like most folks! Start by getting familiar with hiragana, then katakana, and finally basic kanji. After that, seek help from books like the JLPT N4 vocabulary books to become familiar with words, their various meanings, and how to use them in different contexts. As you advance, consider taking the N4 proficiency test. I am no more than a mid-N3 level, so by no means I am an expert on this topic.LOL Though from experience, What really helped me before when learning & starting out is through language exchange and talking to my Japanese friends / tutors on a daily to weekly basis.

  • How do you prefer we support you? Through the tip jar/wishlist or something else?
🔽Answer

Uuu 🥺 TYSM for considering! Tipping is always appreciated but entirely optional. If you’re located in the US, you might also want to check out some of my extra otome merch (available through the store page on this blog). This way, I earn a little and declutter peacefully, knowing that my extra/excess merch will find homes with people who love the genre as much as I do.

  • Just curious if you’d be willing to share your general age? On the otomegames subreddit there’s such a huge spread of age groups and it’s amazing how everyone comes together for their love of 2D men.
🔽Answer

I am in the age bracket for Young Adults: 30-35.😭

  • If you could give an 18+ patch to any game, which would you choose?
🔽Answer

HAKUOKI! lmaooo 🤭

  • Do you interact with/ visit the otomegames subreddit? It’s the largest otome community I’m aware of so I was just curious!
🔽Answer

I remember trying to post a meme about Hajime Morioka back in 2020 and a mod removed my post for inappropriateness! 😭 I have never been back since. lol

  • Any unlocalized otoge you’d love to see localized? and also am i the only one whose upset over the fact ifi isnt localizing FDs quicker then expected cupi FD has been announced for a CN localization and its just sad how far back ifi is w localizations of FDs 😦
🔽Answer

I know this question was asked before CupiPara FD was announced lol😆 Surprise! Surprise! Anyway, IFI is really working hard to bring us our otome games. While they may not be the quickest with announcements, we can rest assured that more otome releases from them are on the horizon. Let’s continue showing our support for their otome titles to get this momentum going.

  • What was your favourite localised game that came out this year? (2023) We got so many and I wonder what other people’s highlights were!!
🔽Answer

JACK JEANNE as mentioned in my OGOTY above!😆

  • I just saw you had uploaded an unboxing of Hana Awase’s box set. Do you plan to do a walkthrough on it?
🔽Answer

I’ve uploaded Mizuchi’s walkthrough and Himeutsugi’s walkthroughs already. Karakurenai and Iroha will have to wait next year! 😊

  • What are your favorite otome casts based on group dynamics? Who do you think gets along best as a believable group of friends? Sometimes, I feel that the love interests are kind of mashed together and don’t have chemistry since that’s not the general focus of otome, so I especially love when they have strong relationships with one another apart from the MC. I love caring about them as friends or even as rivals! Does a particular set of love interests stand apart from the rest in your mind?
🔽Answer

Gosh, I love the found family trope so much! Among groups that, in my opinion, get along well and exhibit believable dynamics, the Code Realize cast stands out. Also, Radiant Tale’s found family dynamic among the cast holds a special place in my heart, especially because of its slightly similar storyline to rich RPGs such as FFIX and FFX.

As for a set of LIs that stood apart from the rest in otome titles, I’d have to say the Shinsengumi in Hakuoki. That group experienced it all: friendship, kinship, death, betrayal and the fact that they go to war and grueling battles together. Their storyline, deep camaraderie and bond are like no other.

  • Would you like to see any otomes with trans protagonists? I’m a trans person and I hear this kind of request often enough, but personally part of otomes to me is just being a no-frills pretty girl, so I’m curious what someone else thinks.
🔽Answer

Oh, I would love to play an otome game with a trans protagonist. I do want it written with a lot of nuance and substance though and not just for the sake of having a trans protagonist or for the sake of representation. I’m very interested with the idea but unfortunately haven’t come across such works like that yet. If you have any recommendations feel free to send them my way!😃

  • Do you ever get burned out or lose your passion for otome? Recently I’ve found myself losing that “spark” I had when I first discovered the genre. You review a lot of games, and probably aren’t super interested in every single one lol. What do you do when you find yourself slogging through a game?
🔽Answer

Oh yes! I pretty much burn out all the time!😭 I always make sure to take breaks in between games so I can recharge! What I would do when I’m feeling totally out of it and losing interest in the genre is turn to my other hobbies and hyperfixate on them HARD! I love kpop and K-variety shows a lot. So after every otome title I finish, I dive headfirst into these and just turn off my brain and enjoy their content. This routine has been consistently effective for me over the years! 😆

  • What’s your wish for a game localization?
🔽Answer

Harukanaru 7 😭🙏

  • Any discourse you’re tired of seeing in the otome community?
🔽Answer

ALL OF THEM LOL. Ain’t got no time for it.

  • Are there any other otome content creators you enjoy following?
🔽Answer

Anyone who puts effort into creating otomege content is an insta-fav person of mine!! 😃

I actively follow Yuriko from Yuriko’s Game Notebook! Their blog has been a constant source of inspiration/motivation for me to give it also my best when it comes to reviewing otome games. I enjoy their content so much, and it’s a bonus that we share the same taste in tropes. Yuriko is not only a fantastic blogger but also one of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing! 🥰

  • How long does it take to do the blog posts for reviews, walkthroughs, etc.? Have you thought of running a discord channel?
🔽Answer

When Im on the grind, On average, it takes me at least a week to finish a game. A week and a half (or more) if its a longer title. When I’m taking my time and there are no deadlines, 3 weeks on average. Takes me 3-4 days to compile all my drafts, notes and write a review – I can be a bit slow when it comes to creative writing. This current post right now took me 4-5 days to write (but that’s because I’m also busy with work and holiday stuff!)😭

I actually have a discord channel but its currently private and dead haha. Not sure when I’ll open it to public since Im always busy and can’t mod anything for the life of me.

  • What game did you think you would not like but ended up loving this year?

Hamefura! I ended up loving it so much!

  • What are your top 5 otome game recommendations for someone who enjoyed variable barricade ?
🔽Answer

  • Lover Pretend
  • Cupid Parasite
  • Code Realize
  • Radiant Tale
  • Amnesia
    • Will you make a hall of fame/shame list for best/worst otome games of all time?
    🔽Answer

I only do ‘Best and Worst’ for each year. I don’t think I’ll be doing an “Of All time” edition.

    • I’ve noticed that sometimes you play otome games that don’t seem to be translated. How do you manage that? Are you fluent in Japanese? (props to you if you are, that’s amazing!)
    🔽Answer

Self-learn the language! Playing JP VN is good practice to improve your skill (but it will take a lot of effort as well as time) I am by no means fluent and can’t hold a proper conversation. As far as reading difficult words, I use JP parser apps like Nihonggo (their offline dictionary is so helpful).

    • Would you ever consider including a romance meter bar into your reviews? I know romance is subjective but sometimes it hard to tell how much the overall game has in it, especially is some routes have heavier romance than others.
    🔽Answer

I have thought about that and I used to have a spice meter back when I did deep dives and Route Reviews (circa 2018 lol). Decided to discontinue it, as romance is awfully subjective. And I’d rather not piss people off by saying xyz is romantic when all the leads did was hold hands LOL

    • What is your all time favorite localized otome game?

    Jack Jeanne, CxM, Cupid Parasite

    • Are there any otome games you DON’T recommend playing?
    🔽Answer

Anything below a 5/10 Rating is an instant HARD NO.

    5/10 is a MAYBE.

As for an actual title that I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL, It’s NICOLE. Godddd, stay away from that disaster.💀

    • Are you ever going to revisit that crimson flower that divides game?
    🔽Answer

    • What was your first ever otome game, and your main love interest from it?
    🔽Answer

Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden and Suzaku Ibun! I didn’t know these were called “otome game” at that time (2008-2009). All I know is that I’m playing a game adaptation of my fav mangas lol. Pls excuse my dusty shelf.

First LI that I brainrotted over was Tasuki (Suzaku Ibun), his character was voiced by Toriumi in the game, and IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO HEAVEN AND CAME BACK!

    • How many games have you given up on (DNF) because of bad translation/terrible story/trigger/any other reason? Are there games (otome and otherwise) that you play but don’t post about?
    🔽Answer

I don’t always post or review the otome games I play as that will burn me to crisp.🤓 I can’t really count the games that I’ve dropped over the years due to those reasons. THERE’S A LOT! BeniBana and Untold Atlas were the otome games that I’ve dropped this year to cite some recent examples.

    • What is your favorite otome game of 2023? Do you plan on playing unvoiced mobile otome games any time soon? I would love to read your thoughts, haha
    🔽Answer

Fav Game of 2023: JACK JEANNE! ^^ And no, I’m not going to play those anytime soon, sorry!😅

    • Have you ever played Dandelion and Nameless? If not, will you?
    🔽Answer

Gosh it’s been so long! Yes, I played Nameless and loved it! I dropped Dandelion a long time ago because I didn’t have enough time to grind on the stat raiser.

    • How do you get all of your otome game merch, like the acrylic stands?
    🔽Answer

Through proxy shopping! If you’re up for it, look into these websites: CDJapan, FromJapan, Buyee, TreasureJapan, Neokyo, Zenmarket. Just be prepared to spend A LOT of money, especially on International shipping.

    • Is there an otome heroine who you really identified with? I really resonated with Piofiore’s heroine because of the shared Catholic background! So I was curious if you had a similar experience.
    🔽Answer

That’s amazing that you identified with Lili! She’s a fav of mine!🥺 I have thought about this a lot, but I couldn’t really find a heroine that truly resonated with me. Most of the characters I identify with are side characters. 😂 One in particular is Eriko Mukai from Collar x Malice; she’s kinda like me IRL.

    • What is your favorite genre type for otomes?
    🔽Answer

    Historical Fantasy!

    • Do you get any sort of inside scoop regarding localization news? If you did you wouldn’t be able to share it, but it would be really neat if Aksys/IFI gave you a heads up before the news broke!
    🔽Answer

    No, I don’t. lol😝

    • Who was your favorite LI and FL this year? Which game this year did you think had the best plot?
    🔽Answer

Radiant Tale has a really good fantasy rpg-like plot. As for best story, characters and over all execution: Jack Jeanne. Fav LI and FL is on my best and worst awards above!😊

    • There’s a lot of sequels for various otome games (ex. Piofiore 1926, Code Realize: Future Blessings & Wintertide Miracles, etc.) Which sequel of those that you’ve play feels like the most successful/satisfying follow-up? As we look towards upcoming sequel releases on titles like Cupid Parasite, what qualities do you think make for a good sequel?
    🔽Answer

Best Sequel I’ve played so far: Piofiore 1926

I think you’re confusing sequels and fandisks. While both continue and pick up on the first games’ endings, the two have completely different purposes.

A Fan disc comprises of additional or extra content for an existing otome game. Mostly, they contain after-stories, alternative endings, bonus scenarios, AU stories, and sometimes, they’ll have the game narrated from a different POV/Perspective, just like in NORN9 Last Era. Most of the content in fandisks provides very little importance and may not necessarily contribute significantly to the first game’s main plot. The purpose of a fandisk, as the name suggests, is to cater to fans of the original work. Mostly, they focus on interactions with the cast of characters and date scenes with the LI and heroine. Y’know, the fluffy and spicy content we all love (aka fanservice).

A Sequel on the other hand, is another full-entry game treated as a continuation of the original work. It expands the narrative of the first game, further develops characters, introduces new important ones, and explores new aspects of the main story/lore. Sequels also include revelations that are crucial and significantly important to the main story. Contents for sequels usually introduce new challenges, conflicts, or resolutions for the main characters of the original game, and they often require familiarity with the original work to be fully understood.

Cupid Parasite, sweet and spicy darling is a fandisk, so I expect LOTS OF FLUFF and SPICE as the title suggest lol 😆

As for the last question: IMO, what makes a good sequel is offering proper closure on issues the first game has glossed over or treated lightly. Also, I have to say I place great value on sequels that have relevance in their revelations. Plot twists and reveals should have a meaningful impact or contribution to the main story, not just for the sake of having plot twists. Any type of reveal should enhance the player’s understanding of the narrative rather than feeling forced. If that makes sense?

    • How many hours a week do you spend on Otome games?
    🔽Answer

Depends really. If it’s an incredibly busy week 15 hours the most. If my day job is not treating me like a workhorse and I have some free time to game on the side then 27-30 hrs the most. This is ONLY when I’m playing a title I’m fin to review though.

    • Have you ever hated an otome game so much you couldn’t finish it?
    🔽Answer

Of course! Lots of times too!😂 I hated Nicole so much, I have picked it up 3x and dropped it 3x!

    • Who was your favorite character in all the games for 2023?
    🔽Answer

    Jinnia (Radiant Tale)🥺

    • Top Otome Characters! Would like to see a ranking!
    🔽Answer

Gaaawd, as a box pusher, these questions drive me crazy!😫 I can’t rank them because I can’t decide who’s better than the other but here’s a list of the characters I’ve severely brainrotted over the recent years (not in order):

  • Jumin Han (Mystic Messenger)
  • Majima (Chou no Doku)
  • Douma (OraSowa)
  • Jinnia (RadiTale)
  • Iba (Hakuoki)
  • Tsugunobu (Birushana)
  • Qi Sili (Light & Night)
  • Kai (JJ)
  • Chui Tanakamigi (JJ)
  • Rozy (Hamefura)
  • Xavier (Love and Deepspace)
  • Also I regularly update my fav character list in my ABOUT section almost after every game I complete! Please feel free to check it out if you’re curious!

    • Do you ever feel burnt out on certain story elements, like if it comes up you are more likely to skim through or skip the text?
    🔽Answer

Yes, I get burnt out easily with incest routes lol But I don’t really skip them, I just muscle them through!🥴 Though ngl, I skimmed a lot of Gretel’s rt in TaiAli because they just prattled on for an hour straight about some stupid memes and I just couldn’t waste anymore of my time with it.

    • How are you? LOL How do you find a balance w/ your job while playing otome games + reviewing them and your real life/health? I imagine it to be super busy.
    🔽Answer

I am alright. Thank you for asking!🥺

Lol えと… 👉👈 I prepare a schedule and set personal deadlines for myself in whatever I do. I usually have a mini checklist posted on my desk, which serves as my “to-do” list each month (that includes bills to pay, errands, stuff to buy, merch to get/hunt for, appointments, blog stuff, dates, everything!!) 😂 As for how I manage to follow them to a T, I honestly don’t know. I guess I’ve always been like this since I was young, so it’s almost like a habit I can’t shake off.

    • Does having to write the walkthrough instructions at the same time as playing the game for the first time sometimes spoil the magic of discovering a new otome? It must make the experience different from someone playing it without thinking too much. What steps do you go through to create a ‘walkthrough’ and how do you manage to enjoy an otome without it becoming a chore?
    🔽Answer

No, not really. I’m used to scum saving in all my games, even those outside the VN spectrum. The only distinction is that I jot down all the choices I’ve made (in the route/game) on my phone’s notepad as well as note on which save files branches out differently. It doesn’t take away the magic or the experience because I’m only pausing a game for a few seconds to type something on my phone, no more different than pausing a game to drink water or make coffee, etc. After I complete a route, I send that notepad file from my phone to my computer and copy-paste everything into this blog, add some title banner pic and that’s it. I do this w/ every route, it’s not big task and technology makes it really easy!

I take breaks in between games. If I feel like its becoming a chore. I drop it.

    • LI or route you’re still thinking about or that stuck with you for a long time (in a positive way)?
    🔽Answer

    IBA (Hakuoki) 😌

    • If you had to describe 2023 otome in one word, which word would it be?
    • What is something you did this year that you’re really proud of?
    • Out of the games that have been announced for 2024 already, which one are you looking forward the most?
    • Lastly, please predict a game that is going to be released this year! (No Fandisks of localized games though hah!)
    🔽Answer

  • (the perfect) storm.😅
  • I went back to my old dermatologist earlier this year and my skin has never looked and glowed better! 🤩
  • Love and Deepspace! I hate cliffhangers, I need more of that game asap!
  • 9RIP!🤫

    • How did you get into game reviewing?
    🔽Answer

I’ve always loved reviewing media in particular. Story time: During my college years I was part of our Uni’s Campus Chronicle. Me and my bestfriend manages a column called ‘YAY or NAY’. I was assigned to review movies (mostly indies), and my best friend reviews fashion trends. Our column became a hit and a hoot on our campus, and I’ve always loved the reaction emails we received from readers. (Keep in mind, this was back in the heyday when the internet was still young, lol) 😂 Thinking fondly of those memories kinda reminds me why I enjoy this past time. Lol I got sidetracked right there haha, sorry! Next question pls!😂

    • Hi otomekitten !!! i wanna ask whose ur fave otome love interest thank u take care!
    🔽Answer

Hello! Gosh, I have so many favs! And they change after each game I complete too! Currently I’m brainrotting over Xavier from the game Love and Deepspace.

Also I regularly update my fav character list in my ABOUT section almost after every game I complete! Please feel free to check it out if you’re curious!

    • What are some rare character types or tropes that you’d like to see more of in otome games?
    🔽Answer

For a more detailed answer, check out my reflections above. I’m so simple and I love cliche tropes so much. I will never get tired of the fake lovers trope, and the chaebols!

    • If you had to get isekai’d into an otome game and get transmigrated as a Main Character, who would you choose, and which LI would you pursue? 🙂
    🔽Answer

Mystic Messenger! I will wholeheartedly be Jumin Han’s b*tch and sit pretty inside his cage forever!😩

    • What otome LI of 2023 made you cry the most?
    🔽Answer

    Mutsumi Kai (Jack Jeanne)🥺

    • Sometimes you will have walkthroughs for a game but no review (e.g. Winter’s Wish), is there a reason for that? As you usually don’t leave negative reviews, could this be a sign that you didn’t like the game?
    🔽Answer

I have reviewed Winter’s Wish, actually. I posted it five days before it came out. lol

I think the only games for which I wrote walkthroughs and still don’t have reviews are BakuRenka and BeniBana. Sadly, I’ve dropped both of them.

    • Have you found your tastes and standards / expectations for games have changed? When you first started reviewing, we were lucky to get one or two games a year, so there wasn’t a ton of comparison that could be done. As you’ve been exposed to more games, do you think your tolerance for story elements being poorly done has gone down? If you went back and redid your reviews for those early games with your otome experience from today, do you think those review ratings would change?
    🔽Answer

Good question! My standards, expectations, and parameters when it comes to otoges or VNs, for that matter, have indeed changed over time. In the past, I was really into super-edgy plots, despite their horrid pacing; Right now, I really value good storytelling with the right amount of nuances, regardless of themes, and whether I’ve brainrotted over any LIs or NPCs

However, I think I have typically rated games with their technical aspects in mind first, even from when I began reviewing stuff. My personal feelings for a game will always come second and I p much reserve my biases for last. So, I don’t think my ratings warrant any change in them (for most of the Switch games, anyway).

The only game I have actually changed ratings for was Mystic Messenger. When I first played it, I was completely down on my knees crazy over it (and Jumin lol) that I rated the game 10/10. However, after replaying it, I realized I wasn’t into the whole Mint Eye plot, and I grew easily tired of it being repeated. So, I changed my rating to 8/10 in VNDB (considering how I felt about the characters, setting, etc. as of recent). On the contrary, if I had played Virche during my PS Vita era, I would have probably rated the game a 9/10 because blood, gore, death, and edgy plot were my life source back then.😂

    • What’s your favorite dinosaur? (alternatively favorite cat breed)
    🔽Answer

Fav cat breed: RAGDOLLS! They are so cute, and they love to cuddle!🥺 I am going to be adopting one soon!

    1. I was LOL-ing so much! thank you for this post! I so agree with your OGOTY! Jack Jeanne is indeed a masterpiece! I never would have picked it up if it wasn’t for this website and for your ratings, so I just want to say thank you for making me aware this beautiful game existed! Your reflections are food for thought especially for aspiring game devs like me. I am trying to make my own romance Visual Novel but I am doing a lot of market research first before I take the plunge!

Also agree with the skinship and touching, I don’t have that as a criteria to make a game standout. A good story and believable romance is enough for me!

    2. I had comments open for years until last year when I was getting someone writing me essays on why they think Star Ocean 4 was a good game while my husband and I both laughed at the multiple terrible things with it and how it was basically unplayable to us without injecting cheats because it was too grindy. That’s when I knew I will never open up comments again. The problem with keeping it open is someone will google something, find a post from ages ago and start rambling while you’re going through your spam box and are like “nobody cares….” lol. 3 months might be pretty good but honestly if it gets too annoying there’s absolutely nothing wrong with closing all comments. It’s too much of a hassle to deal with, people are crazy these days.

      1. Oof the long essays about how you’re wrong and they are right is the absolute worst!😭 Like, its just a blog, its not that serious lol sry you had to deal with that! Ppl need to touch grass! Yeah, if it gets out of hand I may just need to go back to the 3 months limit, can’t mod anything for the life of me these days!🥲

    4. I laughed hard with your post! It’ll definitively help me choose my next title. I think I’ve totally missed jack Jeanne! I dont know why I thought it was barely average 🤔 but now I really want to try it.
So happy to see Ion in it ❤️❤️❤️ I really loves his route (and I think radiant tale climbed in my top 3!!)
Thank you for all the reviews over the years! I pretty much read your thought every tome before I buy any otome and I must admit that I’m on the same wavelenght every time (well Never tried to buy a poorly rated one though 🤣🫣)

    5. I’d be interested in you finishing and reviewing The Crimson Flower that Divides! I remember every year I look up the big english otomes in advance and wondering when your review will come and then getting a little confused why that one didn’t come when I thought I saw something that said you were playing it? It makes sense though WHY you didn’t like that playthrough…But I am interested in hearing if the game is worth it if you skip that AWFUL route or something. I’ve heard the CGs are pretty. Either way, if you do get around to finishing that game it will be fun to see you talk crap about that LI

    6. Hi Chloe !

Thanks again for you hard work this year ! Once again, it’s been a major pleasure to read your reviews, they’re so well written : funny, realiable, emotional. It’s always the first step in enjoying a new game.
This year, I personnaly played these otome :

      – “Hakuoki” : it was my second or third playing ? I must admit I was feeling a little down at the beginning of the year and this title is a fav of mine, Hajime Saito will always be THE one for me.

      – “Birushana : Rising flower of Genpei” : I bought it after reading your review and I juste loved it. The heroise was so endearing, the story so good ? I just loved Noristune’s route, witch I found really well written and cute and really emotional. I liked to see the heroine break free from those who thought they knew better than her what was good for her. Cheh.

      – “Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk” : This one was a big surprise, even if I read your review ! I loved the universe, the drawings and the protagonists. But those routes were a bit too messy to follow for me.

      – “Lover Pretend” : My summer treat ! I think I loved the 4 routes almost equally, wich is so rare. It was so fun, so endearing, so cute, so relatable sometimes. I loved the dynamique between the 4 LI, who gradually became friends. (I’m with you there, the found family is always a treat !)

      – “Collar x Malice” : Boy, what a ride ! I didn’t finish it yet (I still have to play Yanagi’s route) but I love it. The heroine is great, the chemistry between her and the LI is really there and this story ! And I just found the interactions between the boys so cool. I was surprised to not appreciate Okazaki’s route, finding it too pushy, too much for me, too out of the blue. But maybe I just made a mistake by beginning to play with Sasasuka’s route, wich became one of my fav otome route ever I think. I don’t know, I just loved his character and their relationship with the heroine !

And now, to have a little break from the CxM angst, I play “Variable barricade”. A perfect change of pace, it’s sooooo funny and the LI are just too fun to see interact. I find quite interesting to not like very much the heroine : you can feel that’s normal, because this story will clearly be her journey to be more honest and at peace with herself (anyway, I hope ! With a lot of kisses please ^^). The only “weak spot” (and the word is too strong, sorry for my English !) for me is Kasuga. I can’t stand this butler, he’s infuriating in every way for me XD. But I will see where this goes… For now, I play Taiga’s route because he’s clearly the best ? (Very subjective opinion haha).

And I’m so glad to read that “Jack Jeanne” is your favorite otome of 2023. I managed to grab it on sale and I look forward to play it. It seems very different from the games I played this year and your review was really convincing !

Well, sorry about the big comment ^^ I thank you again for 2023 and wish you all the best for 2024 🙂

      1. Woah! that’s a lot of games!
I hope you enjoy CxM! It’s in Yanagi’s route where the story peaks! 💕 and glad you picked up Jack Jeanne! Keep in mind that it has stat raiser elements so its best to take breaks when playing it! But nonetheless, the story was very much worth it! Thank you for the warm wishes, and likewise!!

        Happy New Year! 🎉

        1. Haha, it’s because when I don’t like a character, I tend to rush the route… or to not play it at all sometimes, when it’s possible, I confess ! It helps to save time (or does it, if I play more games because of that -_-‘ ?)
I’m sure I will enjoy the last part of CxM, I expect a lot of surprise and action !
And thanks for the advice for Jack Jeanne 😀 I don’t know about you but I realized that I play more “slowly” the games that are more cosy. Cuteness and warm feelings make me want to play it at a serene pace !

    7. I know I’m super late to the party, but I just got into otome games in the last month or two (not counting my middle school Mystic Messenger obsession). And I wanted to let you know that your blog here is fully what inspired me to delve into it! (And it’s also made picking out what titles I want to pick out a much simpler process, so thank you!)
I’ve only been able to afford 2 or so games so far, but I’ve already got a long list of games I want to catch up on eventually, thanks to all your reviews, LOL!
Anyways, I just wanted to let you know just how much I enjoy your content, and I can’t wait to see your thoughts on the new games coming out this year!!
