Touken Ranbu Warriors Coming to the West in 2022!

Today, Koei Tecmo America announced that they will release Touken Ranbu Warriors (physical and digital) for the Nintendo Switch on May 24, 2022, in North America and Europe. The Japanese release for the game is a bit earlier, which will be on February 17, 2022, and pre-orders for the JP edition will even start as early as tomorrow, September 25, 2021.

NOTE: Keep in mind, that while Touken Ranbu is a “Joseimuke game”. Touken Ranbu Warriors is not.

What genre is Touken Ranbu Warriors?
Touken Ranbu Warriors is classified as a “musou game”. A Musuo game is characterized by its hack n’ slash gameplay with a unique in-battle system that lets you explore large-scale levels filled with fodder enemies and offers a sizable roster of playable characters. Think of Dynasty Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, and Persona 5 Strikers. If you’re a Zelda fan like me, you have probably played Hyrule Warriors, which is another popular musuo game.

TOUKEN RANBU WARRIORS

Touken Ranbu Warriors is the first-ever console game in the Touken Ranbu series. The all-new experience promises to combine the Touken training of the Touken Ranbu -ONLINE- simulation game with the breathtaking action of Koei Temco’s popular Warriors musou series, delivering must-play 1 vs. 1,000 combat.

The game features 15 characters (shown below) from Touken Ranbu -ONLINE-, where famous swords take the form of warriors named Touken Danshi (swordsmen), and the elite fighters are sworn to protect history.

The game is set to feature the electrifying musou action fans expect from a Warriors title including battling alongside partner characters and head-to-head duels against enemies!

Touken Ranbu Warriors also features the “Honmaru,” the main base of our heroes. Here, you can freely place members of the Touken Danshi in order to get a glimpse of their daily lives that can only be experienced in this game.

Touken Ranbu Warriors will be on full display during this year’s Tokyo Game Show. On October 2, starting at 11:00 PM JST, an exclusive first-look will be showcased as part of the official TGS 2021 Online DMM Special Program, with the highly-anticipated segment simultaneously interpreted in English. You can view this presentation on the official DMM Games YouTube channel.

Japan will have a Collector’s Edition of Touken Ranbu Warriors which includes the following items:

  • Nintendo Switch Physical version.
  • Drama CD featuring all of the Touken Danshis in the game.
  • Touken Ranbu Warriors Nintendo Switch Hard Case (by HORI CO. LTD).
  • Design Art Book
  • Skin Stickers (pre-order bonus only)

If you haven’t yet, I encourage you all to watch the presentation video, as it includes KT’s executive director, Mei Erikawa (daughter of Keiko Erikawa, the mother of otome games). She’ll also be explaining other aspects of the game such as the “Honmaru” part of Touken Ranbu Warriors.

One thing I’d like to point out here is that Touken Ranbu Warriors is by far the first-ever Ruby Party game that’s localized for the west. It may not mean anything at this point, but I’m hopeful that if the Touken Ranbu Warriors franchise garners a lot of sales from the western fandom, it may show the developers that there is a wide interest (in the west) for the Joseimuke and Otome genre.

  2. Wow! As a new fan to the series I am beyond happy with this news! I wonder if it does well if they would consider DLC’s releasing more of the characters later on. Lately I feel I need a calendar that highlights all of the upcoming release dates of all these great games before I forget and miss out 😂
